Angelina Everhart-Trueblood and her brother Evan run Everhart Investigations, a PI firm in Chattanooga that solves paranormal crimes committed by supernatural beings. When their new client wants help finding her friend, who supposedly disappeared during a reception at Angie’s aunt Jane’s winter residence, things get . . . complicated.
The client is not who she appears to be, and demons strike the city for the first time since the Witch War. On top of that, evidence is pointing toward the involvement of an overly ambitious vampire—who just happens to be Angie’s ex-husband.
As Angie and Evan team up with CPD, they will have to dig deep into their magical reserves—and rely on some friends in high places—to rid Chattanooga of the danger creeping into their city.

I’ve listened to the entire Jane Yellowrock series on Audible and enjoyed it, and finding out what Angie and EJ got up to as adults was something I was looking forward to. Obviously, given the time frames, that has forced a move to the near future for the action.
I think Faith Hunter has done a reasonable job of translating the children into adults, complete with flaws and mistakes. There is new magic within the world, vampires are less prominent, and Angie and EJ trying to make it independently of their powerful aunt stacks up.
With that said, some of this feels forced, perhaps because there is so much new context to provide for what I am sure will be a series. In addition, the normally impeccable Kristine Hvam is not on top form - I so wish that she had made some effort to learn better French pronunciation, as well as that of some other words, and she’s a country mile away from the British-Jamaican accent she’s supposed to be giving Walter. She’s good enough to keep the listener engaged despite that, but it does grate on my British ears to hear her mangling some of these things.
It made sense for some things to be mangled in the earlier series, not least because Jane Yellowrock didn’t have a university education and had no great pretense at erudition. But that’s not the case of Angie and EJ, who have grown up around vampires that actually speak French natively and have received more education than that afforded by the apocryphal Christian children’s home.
On the whole, though, it’s not a bad first in the series. I hope that now the world has been built and the characters introduced, Hunter will be back into her usual rhythm and future books will be back to her best.
Not bad first outing for the spin-off
