About this listen

When American Lexi Maxwell buys a long-abandoned mansion in a quaint English village, she sees it as a chance to start fresh and bring her dream of running a manor-house hotel to life. But her idyllic plans are soon overshadowed by eerie occurrences—a heartbroken ghost appears each night, kneeling beside a centuries-old ruin, and villagers whisper about Lexi’s striking resemblance to a woman who died under mysterious circumstances more than two decades ago.

As Lexi digs deeper into the history of the ruin and the secrets buried within the manor, she uncovers unexpected connections to her own past—revelations that shake her to the core and threaten everything she holds dear. Caught in a tangle of lies, loss, and long-forgotten betrayals, Lexi is drawn into a chilling mystery, and her only ally is a man haunted by his own past.

a lovely read

The ‘scottish’ accent was actually Irish! It was too distracting. It’s not often I delete a book but in the end I just couldn’t listen!

The only thing I will say against this story is that it was so sad. But it was beautiful and I fell in love with the characters.

Haunting story, so sad and well written and narrated

This was a pleasant enough tale, though fairly predictable. However it was well-written and I would read something else by this author with one proviso - that she used a different narrator. Unfortunately, this one had a weird accent and a tendency to pronounce all short "a's" with an "aw or o" sound so that Jasper became Josper for instance and 'back' became 'bawk'. Once noticed, this little peccadillo could not be un-noticed. The effect of this was to make me grit my teeth and rip me out of the story time and time again.

The main love interest was supposedly Scottish, but it's hard to recall a worse attempt at a Scottish accent. It became a mangled mish-mash of Irish, Scottish and the overspillings of the Tower of Babel. Further, virtually all the men spoke as though they had sore throats or were being strangulated.

Arguably worse, the narrator labours under the misapprehension that all English people speak like the posh inhabitants of Downton Abbey. So, for example, a 17th century country tavern maid (and pretty much any of the English female characters) spoke as if to the manor born with silver spoon firmly in mouth, where one might expect more of an "ere, get that down yer neck, me darlin'" vibe.

The narrator needs to do quite a bit more research when it comes to English accents both past and present. Better still, have those parts narrated by a native British person.

In a nutshell, writing good, story well-researched and executed, but narration, woe is me! Final thoughts. Got this as a freebie, thank goodness. Had I wasted a credit, I would not have been happy.

I endured for the sake of the writer

At first, I was a little worried this would be another same-ish ghost story, but it was a pleasant surprise. A lovely tale with a depth, blending the past and present. The narrator did a great job too.

Great storytelling
