About this listen
Meet Charlie Jones and Annie McLeod. They’ve given up chasing villains and moved to Coombesford in Devon for a quiet life. But there are villains in Devon too. When Charlie Jones finds a body at the bottom of the waterfall in the garden of her English village pub, she assumes it’s a case for the local police. But when suspicion falls on young chef, Iris Murphy, Charlie, and Annie are pulled into the investigation.
Simon Mountjoy was the local boy made good. Returning to Coombesford after making his fortune in London, he spent thirteen years renovating his family home. While he brought employment and prosperity to the village, his talent for upsetting people meant plenty had reason to hate him. But who hated him enough to kill him?
Charlie and Annie recruit former cop turned private detective, Rohan Banerjee, to help with the investigation. Can the trio find the true culprit before their friend is imprisoned? And is the killer about to strike again?

The characters are an assorted bunch – some likeable, others less so. I particularly liked the way the author reminded the reader of the key suspects and their motives once they had all been introduced in the book. Alongside the murder mystery was more than a fleeting glimpse into village life, and the lives of Charlie, Annie, and their daughter Susie.
This book is cozy crime at its very best, and for me it was a cross between Miss Marple and Midsomer Murders.
