The Girl from Montego Bay is the autobiography of trailblazer Rose Hudson-Wilkin, Britain's first black woman bishop, who has been right at the heart of a changing nation for over forty years.

As a student, Rose had a poster over her desk that read: 'Do not go where the path leads. Instead, go where there is no path and leave a trail.'

And she does! Offering eye-opening insights into her humble and challenging beginnings in Jamaica, Rose charts her call to train as an evangelist at the Church Army College in London, where she met her future husband, Ken. Captivatingly open to the nudging of the Spirit, Rose simply has a go at everything that comes her way. The discrimination she's faced, due to her gender and minority-ethnic background, is very real. Yet Rose's infectious energy and humour shine through stories of her beloved Hackney, the ten years she ministered to (sometimes wayward) colleagues in Parliament, and her joy at playing a major role in the Coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla in 2023.

Rose discloses that if there's one thing she would like to see change in her lifetime, it's that accomplishments like hers stop being 'firsts' and simply become normal.

Appointed MBE in the 2020 New Year Honors for 'services to young people and the Church', and listed in the 2020 and 2021 Power list of the 100 the most influential people in the UK of African/African-Caribbean descent, Rose discloses that if there’s one thing she would like to see change in her lifetime, it's that accomplishments like hers stop being 'firsts' and simply become normal.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Girl from Montego Bay. Rose Hudson-Wilkin tells her story with such warmth, honesty and openness, taking us from her childhood in Jamaica through the challenges, opportunities and defining moments that shaped her life and calling.

What stayed with me most was her determination. She faced obstacles connected with family, education, faith, race and being a woman entering spaces where very few people looked like her, yet she continued to move forward without losing her sense of who she was or where she came from.

I found her story both relatable and inspiring. I particularly enjoyed hearing about her Jamaican childhood and then following her journey to Britain and into ministry. Knowing where that journey eventually takes her makes the earlier parts of her story even more remarkable.

Rose narrating the audiobook herself adds so much. Her personality, humour and warmth come through beautifully, and it really does feel as though she is sitting down and telling you her story.

A fascinating and uplifting memoir that I’m very glad I listened to. Highly recommended.

An inspiring, honest and deeply engaging life story

Bishop Rose was a friend of my late mother and recently did her funeral service. As soon as I heard her amazing address I knew I needed to know more about her. Her story is fantastic, her range of experiences on her way to being a Bishop, the people she meets, her service in communities. I’ve welled up several times. Please read. A triumph of a book. And I feel so so privileged to have met her at such a poignant moment in my life.

A must read, loved it

Fantastic book. I gained insight into the role of Bishops and the journey Bishop Rose has taken to get there. Very refreshing and positive. Just because some people say no. Keep going, another door will open.
