A marriage on the rocks. A family in disarray. A weekend in the sun at a luxury, all-inclusive hotel. What could possibly go wrong?

Jo and Dave haven't had a holiday in years. They've had other things on their plate: failed IVF, the death of Dave's mother, doing up the bathroom.

So when Dave’s flashy brother Teddy offers to fly in from Dubai and take them – along with his gorgeous young girlfriend and their curmudgeonly father – to a beachfront resort in the Med, the couple can hardly refuse.

But while romance might be on the cards for some, Jo and Dave soon find that tensions don't disappear in paradise. In fact, they might just get worse...

Set over the course of one scorching weekend, All In is a compulsively entertaining and bittersweet novel that asks: when life gets choppy, how does love stay afloat?

Critic reviews

A brilliant summer read... funny and moving, with characters you feel you really know
Poignant and extremely funny, the frictions that ensue are all too believable (Leon Craig)
Intensely funny… profoundly touching… a very superior literary beach read, the sort of book that you need to finish urgently but that lives on in your head for years (India Knight)
Captures the reality of various relationships on the rocks with startling accuracy and emotional intimacy. I laughed, I cried, I couldn’t pull my eyes away (Daisy Jones)
A really great book... the perfect holiday read
Perfectly observed characters in the pressure cooker of an all-inclusive holiday... I loved it (Luke Kennard)
Powell excels at writing about the thousands of paper cuts that kill a relationship and does it with humour and honesty
A brilliantly relatable novel... superb (Zoe West)
I loved Claire Powell's poignant and funny novel about a luxury family holiday that is far from idyllic (Kate Wills)
Beneath the sunshine and glamour old resentments and family tensions simmer... A perfect poolside read

TBH, I wasn't expecting much of this, seeking an "easy read" after a couple of disappointing hard slogs. To my great surprise, I found it insightful, interesting and fun, as well as being the "easy read" I was seeking. Narration was fantastic, with a great array of different voices for the characters, expertly moving between Dave's yobbish estuary with Kayla's American, Alan's eternal "grumpy dad" Teddy's exhausting over-exuberance, and Jo's middle class despair. Wonderful!

Superb observation of human character

Well written and amusing book about a family holiday at an all inclusive resort. Very well read by the narrator.

Amusing and excellent narrator

I found the introspectiveness a little tiring at times. I also found I was saying to the 2 main characters, come on, get a grip! Finished rather abruptly!

Characterisation quite good

Claire's powers of observation are almost supernatural and I find her books an absolute joy to read. All In is filled to the brim with quiet profundity - taking the mundanity that makes up all of our lives and holding it up to the light.

Real people, real problems; money, marriage, infertility, disappointment, grief... I'm already desperate for book three!

The World On A Pinhead

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

A short mundane story about 5 people who I struggled to like. Not my cup of tea. No depth, no twists, no real storyline. A lot of ‘he said, she said’.

Dull
