About this listen
The fighting season has been extended—with more blood matches than ever—in the sixth installment of this gripping fantasy series perfect for fans of Gladiator.
In the depths of a sweltering summer, amid the waves of heat shimmering off golden sand, the games of Sunja's Pit have assumed a new attitude. One of bitterness and betrayal. Of sweat and desperation. Corruption and cheating rule this season, and there's no end in sight. And outside the arena, battles between bitter rival houses could completely reshape everything.
Furious that her husband's killer has gone unpunished, Zelia of Balgotha is visiting each house to place a bounty on the head of the man who so callously ruined her life: Goll, of the House of Ten. Meanwhile, in the shadowy corners of Sunja, the brutish enforcer known as Gurga is on a ruthless, one-man death march against the underworld powers that rule the streets, seeking his own revenge against those who killed the woman he secretly adored. And the gladiator Prajus—recently of the School of Nexus—realizes his new owner is every bit as bloodthirsty as he is...and willing to take as many heads as needed to win it all.
From the sands, a dragon is rising, while upon the cobblestone streets of Sunja, through a maze of the darkest lanes and back alleys, an ogre is hunting. This is blood sport at its finest. At its worst. At its longest.
©2025 Keith C. Blackmore (P)2025 Podium AudioThe story has been picked back up so easily and flows beautifully. The character development is brilliant and I'm glad some of the minor characters are back.
Truly well done to Mr Blackmore for the story.
I must also add that I appreciate the research done by both the author and narrator from previous books. Mr Lee nails the same voices on obscure characters from 6+ years ago and that allows the story to flow like there was never a hiatus.

Book 6 turned out to be my absolute favourite in the series by far. John Lee's narration was fantastic as always. Definitely my favourite audio book narrator, no contest. The story was really well paced, giving just enough focus to each of the individual character arcs. I was especially excited that my personal favourite character in the series was featured more than in the last couple of books.
I love that I have no idea what to expect from the next instalment of the story. I hope we won't have to wait quite as long for the next one, but if it takes a while, I'm sure it will be worth the wait.
