The Secret Garden is a timeless classic of transformation and healing. When spoiled and lonely Mary Lennox is sent from colonial India to live with her reclusive uncle in a gloomy English manor, she finds herself surrounded by mystery and silence. But everything begins to change when she discovers a hidden, locked garden that has been left untended for years.

As Mary begins to care for the garden, she undergoes her own quiet transformation—becoming curious, compassionate, and full of life. With the help of Dickon, a kind-hearted boy who has a magical way with animals, and her sickly cousin Colin, Mary brings the garden—and the people around her—back to life.

Filled with themes of resilience, nature’s restorative power, and the beauty of friendship, The Secret Garden continues to enchant listeners of all ages with its vivid imagery, heartfelt characters, and hopeful message.

I really enjoyed revisiting The Secret Garden. There’s something very comforting about this story, even though it starts with Mary being a thoroughly unpleasant little girl!

I love the transformation that happens as Mary discovers the garden and starts to care for it. The themes of friendship, nature and finding something to care about still work surprisingly well.

It does have that very old-fashioned feel to it, which obviously comes with the territory of reading a classic, and there are parts that haven't aged particularly well. But there’s still something genuinely charming about the story, and the sense of mystery surrounding the garden makes it easy to get swept up in.

Cathi Colas did a lovely job with the narration, and I found it an easy and relaxing listen.

A lovely little classic
