About this listen

Maxx King storms back in Masters of War, the pulse-pounding sequel to his explosive debut, now a riveting audiobook.

Six months after surviving deadly assassination attempts and failing to stop the World Trade Center tragedy on September 11, 2001, the former Army Ranger turned cybercrime investigator is a hunted man, broken and scarred. Yet as China and the US stand on the brink of catastrophic war, Maxx is thrust into a desperate mission: unite with a bitter rival and stop a vengeful ex-DARPA scientist to halt the chaos that could shatter the world—and beyond.

But if they think the turmoil in Afghanistan and the sinister plans of the Chinese are enough to stop him, they don’t know Maxx. Maxx must outsmart and outfight his enemies—or lose everything. Will he succeed—or die trying? Hit play and find out.

I LOVE this trilogy so far. I listened to the first book, Thunderbird Rising, and was thrilled to see the second available. This series is amazing and just as good if not better than watching a movie. Although, it's fully worthy of that honor! I really enjoy some of the same characters and more developments. That said, you could start with this book and go out of order if that makes sense for you. This is full of action, excitement, elements of romance, high stakes. It keeps you wanting to know what's next! I highly recommend and am looking forward to more with Maxx King soon.

a phenomenal sequel, excited for #3!!!

I was waiting to get into the second book of the series after reading the first, and Master of War delivers. This starts just months after the events of the first, and the story wastes no time in putting Maxx back in the middle of chaos, this time against the backdrop of US-China tensions. Maxx’s character has improved much more in the second book, and while he has the same tactical brilliance and grit, we also see his vulnerabilities and moral conflicts. Knowing what he’s already been through made the stakes here feel even more personal. The action in the book is tight and relentless, and the book is filled with intrigue, cyber warfare and dangerous alliances. I absolutely loved the book and definitely recommend getting into the series.

Relentless and timely, Masters of War hurls Maxx King into post-9/11 geopolitics—military suspense and cyber stakes. Battered but unbroken, he partners with unlikely allies against a vengeful scientist. Wild twists aside, pace and grit deliver.

Full-Throttle Maxx

Buckle up! Masters of War is a heart-pounding, high-stakes conspiracy thriller that absolutely thrives in audio. John H. Thomas delivers an excellent sequel, and Scott Fleming’s gravelly, commanding narration elevates it into an immersive experience.

The audiobook’s pacing is nonstop—cyber warfare, double-crosses, tactical combat, and espionage collide in cinematic detail. Yet the emotional core remains: Maxx wrestling with guilt, loyalty, and impossible choices. Fleming’s performance perfectly matches the intensity. His delivery captures both Maxx’s grit and his inner vulnerability, keeping the listener hooked through every twist. For listeners who crave adrenaline-fueled thrillers with depth, Masters of War is a gripping ride!
