About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

From bestselling author and Strictly Come Dancing’s Head Judge, Shirley Ballas, a sparkling toolkit for living your best life, and new stories from Shirley's life on and off the dance floor.

After twenty years of shiny floors, sambas, and sequins, we’re more captivated than ever by the ‘Strictly Journey’ – a contestant’s inspirational roller-coaster ride of personal growth as they learn each new routine. It’s a process that requires stamina, resilience, and an openness to total self-expression - and it teaches you as much about yourself as it does the dance.

No one knows this journey more deeply than Strictly’s Head Judge, Shirley Ballas. In Best Foot Forward, she takes you on her own personal journey, sharing the tools she’s developed to live life to the fullest.

Grounded in the world of dance, Shirley’s life lessons offer a unique toolkit for navigating everyday challenges. Each chapter is anchored by a key principle that Shirley has learned from both personal and professional experiences, collecting fascinating stories of open-mindedness (‘Listen to the Music’), self-confidence (‘Dress the Part’), managing change (‘Learn to Pivot’), working with others (‘Trust Your Partner’) and more.

Written with her trademark unguarded and nurturing style, Best Foot Forward takes you on an inspirational tour through Shirley’s toolkit for living a vibrant and fulfilling life.

loved it all from start to finish. Such an amazing lady. Very interesting to hear how she got to where she is today. She deserves all that she has. May she live another 40 years bless her .

I loved Shirley’s positive energy and the way she shared the trials and tribulations equally with the highlights of her life with us.
Having watched her in many of the shows she describes and remembering seeing her go through some notable experiences on screen, it was both satisfying and intriguing to then hear her account of them. It was pleasing to note how clearly she had expressed herself, as she always does, and then to hear her message had come across exactly as she meant it to. I particularly refer to “Bear Pit” with this observation. I really enjoyed this section , which was very entertaining.
Although she does repeat her message slightly too often at times, she leaves us in no doubt of her intention for us, her pupils, to live our lives to the full.
As a judge on Strictly, I think she is a kind, honest, supportive and caring teacher, and this follows through to how she lives her life. She has taken many knocks from unkind, dishonest, cruel bullies, yet she has not allowed herself to be a reflection of this treatment and instead has always conducted herself as the best example of a human being.
Such a positive reflection of a wonderful woman! Well written and read, Shirley!
