What do a mercenary and a mortician have in common?

Dead. Freaking. Bodies.

Callum Walker kills people for a living. Although he doesn't get a say in who his boss puts on his list, he likes to hunt people who hurt children in his spare time. After a misunderstanding that leads Callum to believe Ryan Fairview—a local funeral director—is responsible for hurting one of the neighbourhood children, he finds his next target.

However, Ryan isn't like other morticians. He can see dead people. So, when Callum breaks into Fairview Funerals ready to kill him, Ryan is shocked to find that his would-be murderer is haunted by all the people he's killed.

Ryan might be just the man to help Cal get rid of his little ghost problem. The only problem is, these two are polar opposites, and Ryan can't seem to get over the small issue of home invasion and attempted homicide.

Will Cal win over the stubborn and neurotic mortician? Or will Ryan refuse to be swayed by the impulsive yet charming mercenary?

Oh my good god! This is genius! I’m so glad I waited for the Audio to release before reading this. What a fun read! Yes it has some triggering topics and won’t be for everyone but honestly I just found it mostly hilarious and so cute! I absolutely just loved Callum and Ryan (and All supporting characters!) the narrators for this book are outstanding in this! I’m typically split on Alexander’s narration - sometimes I love his voice and sometimes i genuinely hate it but he is simply DEVINE in this book the best I’ve ever heard of him. When he drops to his deep husky voice he gives literal chills. It really suited Cals character how he could switch from his more hyperactive voice to his deep menacing and sexy voice. My only VERY slight complaint is that I wish more focus was put on the paranormal aspect throughout the book. It kinda gets lost and seems to be forgotten about tbh. But I still loved it so much! I cannot wait for the next book in this series to come out on Audio it’s going to be hell waiting for it 😩 I will just have to relisten to this in the meantime!
Also spice was so well written 😍

Cal and Ryan forever. These two fit like 2 pieces of a puzzle. Everything about them fits together. And the trauma and turmoil they both went through made their love even more special. I couldn’t get enough. Can’t wait for book 2 from Cassandra’s pov. Also give me more of Vox too!

What a love 🥰

The Mercenary and The Mortician by Alexandra St Pierre 4/5: This was a very strong dark romance that had potential to be a 5 star but a few little issues prevented me from getting there. Firstly this was my first dark romance, and it was fun (a little non con at the start but that thankfully petered out early) We follow Ryan, a mortician who can see ghosts, and Cal, a wild feral assassin with a golden retriever personality. Together they get caught up in a child trafficking ring, as Cal begins to dismantle it. I really liked the characters and the plot, and I really loved the expanded cast (including the Sapphic sisters, and Vox, Cal's mute assassin friend), and I found the romance quite fun. My biggest issue is the pacing, I feel some points happened too quickly while other moments are really drawn out. That could be more because this is still a romance at its heart, so the romance takes centre stage, but a lot of the plot I wanted more from. Another tiny issue I had was the paranormal stuff, it was really interesting but I felt it wasn't kinda ignored for vast chunks of the book until it was needed for the third act. Also the ending scenes expand the paranormal in a way where I went "oh, does that mean this is now X". That being said I will be reading the rest of the books (by both authors, as I know book 2 focuses on side characters from this book from another author). I am really excited for book 3 which I think is the sapphic book, as I really like their burgeoning romance.

A strong dark romance that I wish had just had a little more plot

Entertaining but far fetched at times. I liked most of the characters and it was funny a lot of the time. 6/10
