About this listen

In this 10th Anniversary Edition, Shonda Rhimes, executive producer of Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, Bridgerton, Queen Charlotte, and more, not only revisits her galvanizing New York Times bestseller but gives readers an extraordinary cache of brand-new stories that showcase the continuing power that saying YES has had on her life.

In Shonda’s own words: “This book is the same as before, but it also is not. It is brand-new. It has changed. Transformed. Evolved. Grown. Just like me.”

In 2015, Shonda Rhimes, the trailblazing creative force behind some of television’s most beloved series, took on a challenge that would change her life forever. She decided to say yes to everything for a year, and the results were exhilarating. Hailed as “honest, raw, and revelatory” (The Washington Post) and “as fun to read as Rhimes’s TV series are to watch” (Los Angeles Times), Year of Yes quickly became a New York Times bestseller, captivating readers everywhere and inspiring them to undertake their own YES journeys.

In this celebratory and expanded anniversary edition, you’ll find more wildly candid and transformational chapters that reveal how the mega-talented Shonda, once a self-described introvert, achieved badassery worthy of a Shondaland character—and how you can, too.

I loved Shonda's storytelling and style of humour. Her honest, yet powerful account of how she single handedly upgraded her already incredible life into one where happiness blossomed and bloomed on her terms was a great life lesson. If I can adopt 20% of what ive just heard, im.excited for my future. Thank you Shonda!

I loved Shonda's storytelling

Admittedly, I went into this blind—expecting a self-help book—and instead ended up listening to Shonda Rhimes’ memoir with motivational sprinkles. That’s partly on me, because beyond knowing she helped bring Bridgerton to Netflix, I haven’t seen any of her other shows. But ultimately, her life story just didn’t inspire me or resonate in any meaningful way. The core message—say yes to the things that scare you, and watch the fear dissolve—is great. I’m fully on board with that. But the stories behind the message? Uninspiring. I kept waiting for big breakthroughs, dramatic shifts, something that felt life-altering… and instead got a series of fairly average moments in the life of a successful woman. For example: the teleprompter failed during her speech and she pushed through. I mean… girl, anyone with a job and bills to pay would have finished the damn speech. That said, she can write a brilliant speech. Credit where it’s due. I’m glad I listened on Audible instead of buying the physical book—I’m pretty sure I would’ve DNF’d it, and honestly, the audiobook felt like less of a commitment (and was cheaper). Overall: if you love Shonda and want to spend time in her head, you’ll enjoy this. If you’re looking for a self-help book or something genuinely transformative, this isn’t it.

I loved her honesty about her failures and fears. Especially when she said if you are succeeding in one area, you are no doubt failure somewhere else (not exactly those words)
