For the first time in the series, I found myself unable to finish the book. It felt as though the story was reaching back to the very first Alex Cross novel and trying to rework or extend it, rather than offering a fresh and engaging new plot. Instead of feeling excited or clever, it came across as forced and lacking inspiration.
The pacing never quite built the tension I expected from a James Patterson novel, and I struggled to stay invested in the storyline. I kept waiting for it to pull me in, but it simply did not happen. Even the familiar characters, usually a strong point of the series, did not feel compelling enough to keep me going.
This was disappointing as a loyal reader, as the Alex Cross books are usually fast paced and gripping. I hope this is just a rare misstep and that future instalments return to the standard that made the series so enjoyable in the first place.
