About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The escapist and gorgeously evocative new love story from Adriana Trigiani, author of instant
New York Times bestseller The Good Left Undone

Lake Como, New Jersey: Jess Capodimonte Baratta is not living the life she dreamed of. Divorced and residing in her parents' basement, the most joy she finds in life is helping her Uncle Louie with his marble business. But when things take a turn in Louie's life, and family secrets come to light, Jess learns that her family made choices over the years--choices that stifled her dreams. Furious, and determined to start living, Jess heads off on an adventure--to her family's ancestral home.

In Italy, Jess begins to stand on her own two feet for the first time in her life. And that's before dreamy Angelo enters the picture. But just as Jess is finding happiness, she learns there is even more to her family story.

Will the hidden corners of Uncle Louie's past send Jess back to New Jersey? Or help her finally get to live life on her own terms.

I liked the description of the Italian landscape and cuisine. I liked the messages of positivity and hope,
But, I found the weight of social and family expectation, as experienced by the main character, Jess, oppressive and irritating. This. In a way, is a testament to the author’s skill.

The degree of personal introspection and the flavours and beauty of Italy.

Loved this book from the first chapter and the narration by Mira Sorvino is a joy to listen to. I’ve read most of Adriana’s books, my favourite being Big Stone Gap, but this comes in as a close second. It has heart and humour in heaps and it is storytelling at its very best. Adriana’s books take you on a journey that you don’t want to end, you’ll laugh out loud and shed a tear. Highly recommended ******

If Moonstruck, Steel Magnolias and Under the Tuscan Sun has a lovechild, this would be it.
