About this listen

David Banks reads this novelisation of a classic TV adventure for the Fifth Doctor, Turlough and Peri.

The Doctor is enjoying the sun on a holiday island, until things get hotter than he bargained for.
The young American, Perpugilliam Brown, brings to the TARDIS a mysterious object that her archaeologist step-father has found in a sunken wreck. When the Doctor’s robot friend Kamelion reacts to the object unexpectedly, it has bewildering consequences for the TARDIS crew.
For Kamelion sends the Doctor and his friends to Sarn, a terrifyingly beautiful planet of fire. This strange world provides the key to Turlough’s secret past – and, once again, the Doctor is pitted against the wily Master.

David Banks, who played the Cyber Leader in the BBC TV series, reads Peter Grimwade's 1985 novelisation of his own TV serial.

I greatly enjoy any audiobook narrated by David Banks, and this, for the most part, is no exception. He creates interesting and distinct voices for each character, the best being Kamelion. The only real problem I have with his narration is a rather halting performance around Chapter 5. However, I’m sure this is not entirely his fault, as I find it difficult to understand why the producers decided to use these takes. But apart from that, a fantastic performance. The story is not the most interesting, but is perfectly entertaining and is even quite good at times. A recommended listen for if you want a fun distraction.
