About this listen

The BRAND NEW nail-biting thriller from NUMBER ONE bestselling author of The Wives! Perfect for fans of Freida McFadden and Lisa Jewell.

Helen wanted to believe the bookshop was a fresh start. But the past had a way of creeping in, whispering through the shelves, refusing to be left behind.

Helen Appleby just wants a quiet life. Recently released from prison for the manslaughter of her partner, she's trying to forget her past mistakes – all of them - to rebuild her life and move on.

When she decides to open a bookshop, she’s certain this is the perfect new start. Here, amongst the quiet shelves of her shop and between the covers of her books, she can hide away from the real world and begin again. The world of books is the perfect place to find happiness - even if it is all lies.

But the past can never stay hidden…

As she settles into life as an apparently timid bookseller, it seems that someone is determined to sabotage Helen's new life and ruin everything she's built.

But Helen has killed once before. And to protect her future, she could be willing to kill again...

Don't miss another page-turning, nail-biting read from the queen of psychological thrillers, Valerie Keogh!

I love Valerie's books and writing style. At times, Helen does seem too naive for a woman who has been in prison, but that is my only slight criticism. An excellent novel. Recommended.

Excellent book

I'm loving this new author, to me anyway. A real page turner, and the narrator is brilliant, bringing the characters to life and painting visual pictures in my mind. On to my 2nd now.

5 star book

hile Helen Appleby was serving two years inside for killing her abusive boyfriend, all she dreamed of was owning and running a bookstore. So, on her release, with the help of an inheritance and her older sister Sarah, she finds an old shop that needs some TLC up for sale.
With restaurant owners down from London next door, an overzealous probation officer, and a couple of elderly ladies willing to donate lots of books to help her on her way, what could go wrong?
This book went around and around in circles.
Not Keogh's best.

3/5

I felt dizzy by the end.

I love the way the narrators voice made the bookshop come alive, I could picture it’s cosy interior. The story was good but as I said, took a long while to progress. 5/10

A slow but enjoyable burner
