Because second chances come when you least expect them...

Linda Standish has been a friend to the friendless for the past thirty-three years, in her role at the council’s Unclaimed Heirs Unit. And now she’s looking forward to the joys of an early retirement.

But before she hangs up her lanyard, Linda takes on one last case – that of Levi Norman – a Welshman who made his home on a remote Scottish island for the five years before he died. Linda must visit Storrich to track down Levi's remaining relatives . . .

What brought Levi here? And who did he leave behind? Obliged to travel (by hearse!) with her arch nemesis, and helped (and hindered...) by the local residents, Linda searches for clues to a life now lost. And in the process unexpectedly makes new friends, and discovers things about herself she never knew.

Bursting with all the heart and humour that has made Ruth’s name as a screenwriter and author, By Your Side is a joyful celebration of friendship, love and community.

What a wonderful story, warm, witty, romantic, heartbeaking and uncannily relatable. Great characters too. Ruth, you apolgised on The One Show in case your Scottish accent wasn't good well let me tell you as a 54 year old gal from the Highlands 😅 it was fab 😊 Loved it and would thoroughly recommend you get your lugs round it.

So good that I'm missing Bruce Springsteen night to finish it and I love The Boss 😁

I’ve always loved to read books the feel of a new story belonging just to m.when I lost my sight Audible books were my go to and sometimes I really don’t enjoy listening to someone interpreting the book that I know would be different in my own head. However, this Brilliantly written, clearly well researched interesting funny sad and the accent were amazing. What a lovely read thank you Ruth

Only dislike is that it ended.
Brilliant characters that I feel I’ve known for years.
Want to say more but don’t want to spoil it.

I loved this book, the language was a bit much but it didn’t detract from the wonderful warm, compassionate and emotional novel. Joyous.

Wonderful Book

Having read "The Three of Us" and been a bit disappointed I nearly passed this over as a listen. So glad I didnt though, this is funny and touching in equal measures. Ruth Jones is a good narrator and does a good Scottish accent even if on the Welsh parts I kept seeing Nessa in my minds eye! So glad I gave this a try, really heartwarming and loved Linda Standish, such a well rounded character with all her loveable flaws. Would definitely recommend for an easy and uplifting read.
