About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Sophia, Safa, Ella, Ajola and Caoimhe have been friends since school. They are difficult, unlikeable women; funny, sharp and clever ones – the sort that would have probably ended up burned at the stake a few hundred years ago.

When one of them is about to be framed for murder, they inextricably bind their fates together via some bin bags, a spade and a promise never to tell. Afterwards, they decide to separate to ensure the safety of their secret, leaving each of them to navigate the daily challenges of womanhood alone.

But when an anonymous blackmailer threatens to expose them years later, the group must come back together to get their stories straight – and find out who is behind their torment. But is it already too late?

Evocative, sharp, and full of insightful humour, startling debut I Know Where You Buried Your Husband is a painfully relatable examination of 21st century womanhood.

Critic reviews

Marie O'Hare's voice is really refreshing; funny, bold, wry whilst constantly underpinned by something deeply truthful that really resonated with me. Obviously the pacy and surprising plot kept me turning the pages, but it was the detail and depth of these characters paired with the careful exploration of their relationships that made me stay up til the early hours to finish it. I want to press it into the hands of every woman I know (and maybe, even, some men!).
The strong female characters all feeling the strain of patriarchal power in different ways - and their different responses to it - will cause many heads to nod along in recognition and relief.
Clever, daring, and darkly funny. With huge heart, and at times with teeth, I Know Where You Buried Your Husband is an utterly compelling read. These vividly drawn characters will stay with you long after you put down the book.
Hilarious, vindicating and liberating.
Marie O’Hare has created some strong female characters…telling a gripping story of their friendship.
I’d recommend it to anyone who likes an edge-of-your-seat crime story.
