About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

10,000 miles. 16 countries. 352 days.

Hardest Geezer, Russ Cook, is the first person to run the entire length of Africa. From his starting point in Cape Agulhas, South Africa, through sandstorms in the Sahara Desert, rainforests, mountain ranges and long empty roads stretched out for miles in front of him, Russ ran the equivalent of 386 marathons finally crossing the finish line in Tunisia 50 weeks later.

Attempted kidnaps, being held at gunpoint in an armed robbery and the whole challenge left hanging in the balance when he was denied the right to cross Algeria, Russ never once contemplated giving up. When he crossed the finish line in Ras Angela, he did so with the eyes of the world on him.

Africa may have been his most physical challenge yet but it certainly wasn’t his first: he’s broken the record for the fastest car-pulling marathon and been buried alive for a week with nothing but water and a camera to record the experience.

In Hardest Geezer: Running Africa, Russ Cook shares how he turned his life around to face these challenges and shares his motivations and tales of incredible determination, sheer grit and endurance.

‘You get one chance at life. Go and have a stab at it.’

For those who haven’t seen the YouTube videos, or those who don’t know this story, then this gives a perfect listening journey of the differences in ‘western’ life to areas of the world that are so vastly different. Unbelievable idea, that was completed by and amazing bloke and all those that supported him!

An amazing account of strength

I've never been so gripped by a book, couldn't stop listening and following his route on google maps. The feat of endurance is incredible, running back to back marathons whilst navigating the terrain and politics of the africa continent. Such a well written book and told by the man himself. Had me in tears at the end. If you want to be inspired to achieve more and endure difficult moments, get this book. You will learn what it takes to do something thought impossible 😀

What a Geezer!!

No gimmicks or over commercialism. Raw desire to challenge himself for its own sake is an incredible story and metaphor for life . Hardest geezer I salute you.

What a guy.

I admit that I’d completely missed Russ’ adventure when he ran the length of Africa. But I gave this book a try - and so glad I did. Russ is completely crazy, and his stories are insane. I’m so glad he narrated it and I thoroughly recommend it. It is a lot like eavesdropping a geezer talking in a pub, and is so captivating and entertaining. I listened to this in 4 settings and tomorrow I’m going to try a long run. It’s that inspiring. I would also recommend watching Russ Cooks YouTube videos along side listening to this book.

Brilliant. Get it, you won’t be disappointed

Massively inspiring, wish it had been longer! The book that is, I think his run was long enough…
