About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Beloved award-winning actress Kelly Bishop, famous for playing the iconic Emily Gilmore in Gilmore Girls, finally tells the whole story of her six decades in show business.

Kelly Bishop’s storied career has been defined by landmark achievements, from winning a Tony Award for her turn in the original Broadway cast of A Chorus Line to her memorable performance as Jennifer Grey’s mother in Dirty Dancing, but it is probably her role as matriarch Emily in the modern classic Gilmore Girls that cemented her legacy.
Now, Bishop reflects on her remarkable life and looks towards the future, sharing some of her greatest stories and the life lessons she’s learned on her journey. From her early transition from dance to drama, to marrying young to a compulsive gambler, to the losses and achievements she experienced—among them marching for women’s rights and losing her second husband to cancer—Bishop offers a rich, genuine celebration of her life.
Full of witty insights, The Third Gilmore Girl is a warm, unapologetic, and powerful memoir from a woman who has left indelible impressions on her audiences for decades.

Critic reviews

Remarkably candid... the great ‘raconteuse’ recalls her Dirty Dancing fears – and the sharp suits and sharper barbs of Emily Gilmore
Kelly Bishop is a remarkable person with remarkable stories to tell. I cherish every long lunch and late work night I’ve ever had with Kelly, sharing stories of our careers and love lives, our ups and downs, our disappointments and hopes. This book feels like one of those special encounters—it’s a satisfying conversation with a treasured friend. (Lauren Graham, author of 'Talking As Fast As I Can')
The Third Gilmore Girl is a ‘Number One.’—I loved it! She’s sassy, she’s funny she’s honest... she’s a winner! (Priscilla Lopez, Tony Award-winning actor)
Bold, unapologetic, and inspiring, Kelly tells her story exactly as she lives her life: on her own terms. Gee… I wish I could be like her when I grow up. (Sutton Foster, Tony Award-winning actress and author of Hooked: A Memoir in Crafts)
Touching…I admired Bishop’s agency and dignity throughout
Candid and down-to-earth

What a wonderful human being Kelly Bishop is. So down to earth, smart and funny. This is no doubt one of my favourite all time memoirs, and yes, I’m writing this while thinking about turning on Netflix right away just to watch “Gilmore Girls” for perhaps the 20th time already. I loved this so much and recommend it to anyone who’s pursuing their dreams out there.

I’m sticking with several quotes by Kelly, but the two that resonated with me big time were:

“If it’s meant to work out it will, if it isn’t, it will just make me available for what I’m supposed be to doing instead.”

“On very rare occasions, when I find myself surrounded by judgmental snobs, I’ve been politely tolerant while secretly looking for the exit…”

Magnificent!!!

Kelly Bishop is so much more than “just” the Third Gilmore Girl (although I adore her for this part) and it is a pure joy to discover the rest of her fascinating story through her own words and voice.
Infinitely worth listening to (or reading!) and special love for the wisdom of the last chapter that I will always try to keep in mind and pass on.
Thank you Kelly!

What an extraordinary life (and outlook on it)
