About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

A heart warming and irresistible novel about the rejuvenating power of pottery, for fans of
Before The Coffee Gets Cold and What You Are Looking For Is In The Library.

She rubbed the spoiled clay with her fingertips. Like a wound as it heals, the traces faded, and had soon vanished completely, as if they’d never been there at all.

Burnt out by her newswriting job, Jungmin abruptly quits; she’s worked tirelessly for years and she needs to make a change.

Now, after months of hibernation, it’s time to put her life back together. Venturing out into the streets near Seoul, she stumbles upon the Soyo pottery workshop. Drawn in by its light and warmth, and the smell of clay and coffee, Jungmin feels something unfurl within her…

Here, everyone has a story to share, and as the seasons change, Jungmin returns to herself. Pot by pot, plate by plate, Jungmin discovers that as her hands become busier, her mind becomes calmer, and her heart opens up like never before.

From a rising talent, this is an uplifting story of new friends and old practices, of finding community, and of what happens when you finally slow down in this fast-paced world.

please note the book is rather nice
I absolutely did not like the way it was written
the tone was monotone, slow and without emotions. no pathos, no energy was communicated. maybe it was intended to generate calm, but to me it was just boring and droning on. there were time I thought it was read by an AI.

read so flatly it could have been an ai

I struggled with reading this until I switched over to this audiobook, and felt it flowed a lot more easily. I could empathise with Jungmin's need to hide herself away and enjoyed her coming back put of her shell, and discovering a better, happier, more contented life for herself, with a slower pace and more moments of joy. It was also good to see her open up and face her past, so she could heal herself and move forward. The message was almost subtly hidden in the story, and I felt it could have had more impact, and been a lot more powerful in the telling.

better as an audiobook

Overall a comforting story that gives you the uplifting ending you root for, the writing is great at painting the scenes of a pottery studio where healing. The ending was the best part, I think all the characters' stories were wrapped up in, although not in the neatest way, the most natural way. I do think though, that there was too much sudden head-hopping (though this might be due to the performance), and some of the character's stories were told not shown.

Performance wise, the reading is much weaker than what I'd expect from this audio book publisher. There is odd pacing, and it is monotone to the point that it's hard to distinguish different character's voices. I thought it might have been a computerised AI reading up until the end.

A cozy story that was let down by the audio book performance

Fragmented story; can't get to it. Rare for Jap and Korean translated novels. Can't feel for the various characters.

Disappointment
