Two boys fall in love in a deadly world, but it's the secrets they keep that might kill them.

Seventeen-year-old Zach was visiting his uncle in a small Montana town when a mysterious illness ripped through the world. Most died, but those who survived the Infection became mindless killers, spreading the disease with a single scratch. Now, a year later, civilization lies in ruins, and Zach is the town's sole survivor. Desperately lonely, he longs to return to his family in Seattle, but his fears hold him captive.

Eighteen-year-old Aiden is on a critical mission for the covert Scientific Collective, delivering vials whose contents could cure the Infection. Tortured by his boyfriend's death, he welcomes the risks of the perilous journey. When a militia attacks Aiden, he flees to Zach's town.

The boys escape together and soon form a bond as they comfort each other in this desolate and broken world. The farther they travel, the more their affection grows, as do the forces pulling them apart. But their greatest threats are the secrets they keep. Zach hides details of his uncles death, and Aiden conceals the vials sinister origins. In order to survive, they'll have to confront the truths that could tear their love apart.

More sentimental than expected and very engaging. Extremely well read and heart warming. Ripping yarn at its best.

Really great story, my only issue is the ending being too rushed. Would definitely recommend for fans of Adam Silvera or Erik J. Brown.

Great story!

I really want to love this book. There are aspects of it that are great - the side characters are probably the best part for me. I just wish Aiden and Zach had a more functional relationship. I get it, the apocalypse is hard. But the two of them spend so much time either betraying each other or withholding crucial information from each other that it’s difficult to truly root for them by the end.

The book is at its best when these two are allowed to actually form a bond and figure out how a relationship works in this world they’re in. I genuinely enjoyed the moments they shared together. I just wish I hadn’t spent the entire book wondering what they’d do to upset each other next.

I will say, the performance is fantastic, each character truly has their own voice. Easily the best part of choosing to digest this book through Audible.

SPOILERS:

In the final chapters, when I was really hoping they’d have some extended time “happy”, they once again separate, Aiden discovers tragic information (which, I must say, is very kindly laid out for him to easily find and understand, despite no clear explanation of how), and then they reunite just in time for a “and they lived happily ever after” ending that I sadly don’t think was entirely earned.

Interesting premise with a frustrating story
