About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The first woman ever admitted to a prestigious order of mages unravels a secret conspiracy that could change the practice of magic forever in this standalone dark fantasy from the author of
The Sword of Kaigen.

For twenty years, Sciona has devoted every waking moment to the study of magic, fuelled by a mad desire to achieve the impossible: to be the first woman ever admitted to the High Magistry at the University of Magics and Industry.

When Sciona finally achieves her ambition and becomes a Highmage, she finds her challenges have just begun. Her new colleagues are determined to make her feel unwelcome – and instead of a qualified lab assistant they give her a janitor.

What neither Sciona nor her peers realize is that her taciturn assistant was not always a janitor. Ten years ago he was a nomadic hunter who lost his family on their perilous journey from the wild plains to the city. But now he sees the opportunity to finally understand the forces that decimated his tribe, drove him from his homeland – and keep the privileged in power.

At first, mage and outsider have a fractious relationship. But working together, they uncover an ancient secret that could change the course of magic forever – if it doesn’t get them killed first.

This is a really well written and performed book. The story is interesting and the world captivating.

The only negative for me was that it felt very white saviour (or the story’s equivalent of), especially near the end.

Enjoyable but a bit white saviour-y

What can I say. M L Wang produces another captivating manner. Fantasy academia that actually feels like academia with realistic introspection and realistically brutal and beautiful ending. Highly recommended

Loved it

It’s hard to give a review of this book without giving away key details to the plot so, in short, you need to give this ago. It’s a thought provoking view of humanity and how organised religion will justify any actions in order to control the narrative.

Outstanding

I should have know this book would destroy me after M.L Wangs over work Sword of Kaigen.

This book can only be described as mind destroying. It makes you think, it makes you feel and by God it makes you cry. From the very first chapter I was sobbing

The writing style is written so beautifully that it makes you question everything. I can to find myself hating the FMC because of her ignorance but her ignorance was warranted and it makes you question her as a character and the other characters around her.

It makes you question morality and how society to shape our moral and not always in the best direction. This book details truth and how truth is both a lie and a dreamers pursuit.

Knowledge is the pursuit of Truth
Knowledge is the pursuit of Power

THOMIL. Omg I love him for eternity. Honestly his character is well written, I wish we got more of him and yet I understand why we didn’t because when we do him he is like the roar of thunder.

Do not read this book if you do not want to question yourself and question your own morality.

To read this book is to descend into madness and it is liberating.

I wish it was not a standalone that after THAT ending we knew what happens next. I do not want to leave this world.

M.L Wang you have made me empty and I can only wait for your next Masterpiece to fill the void just like Blood Over Bright Haven filled the void left by Sword of Kaigen.

I AM DESTROYED 10/10

A mirror to today's society. This book pulled me out of the deepest reading slump and I got it after hearing a 30 second review of the first half of the book. It will definitely become a frequent re-listen!

Beautiful!
