The Blue sisters have always been exceptional – and exceptionally different.

Avery, a strait-laced lawyer living in London, is the typical eldest daughter, though she’s hiding a secret that could undo her perfect life forever.

Bonnie was a boxer but, following a devastating defeat, she's been working as a bouncer in LA – until a reckless act one night threatens to drive her out of the city.

And Lucky, the rebellious youngest, is a model in Paris whose hard-partying ways are finally catching up with her.

Then there was Nicky, the beloved fourth sister, whose unexpected death left Avery, Bonnie and Lucky reeling.

When, a year later, the three of them must reunite in New York to stop the sale of their childhood home, they find that it's only by returning to each other that they can navigate their grief, addiction and heartbreak and learn to fall in love with life again.

Critic reviews

'The story of Avery, Bonnie, Nicky and Lucky is a healing balm to lost souls. Blue Sisters will unearth tenderness and heartache from spectacular depths within you, giving new dimensions to the word blue.' Xochitl Gonzalez, author of Olga Dies Dreaming

'I never imagined a novel about grief could leave me feeling so warm. Coco Mellors has crafted a richly textured tale of love, loss, and addiction in all its complexities. When I made it to the final page, I had tears in my eyes. I will be thinking about the Blue sisters for a long time.' Isabel Kaplan author of NSFW

I listened to this on audio. I struggled with it at first until getting to know the four sisters. Avery from drug addiction to law school and becoming a wife. Bonnie, world class athlete until deciding to quit. Nicky, the one that passed away, aged 27 the girly girl of the sisters. Lucky the baby sister, model, secretly shy.

Each chapter is an individual sister. If you like long chapters then this is for you. If you get lost in long chapters I probably wouldn’t recommend.

All the sisters become lost. ‘Never too late to be found’.

I enjoyed learning about their individual roles, upbringing and so much more with what life chucks at you. Intimate relationships the want to be with someone who is guiding you in assisting in life. LGBTQ+. The book covers pain, addiction, grief and so much more. It’s enjoyable that you see the sisters coming closer together. I did struggle to connect with the emotion. It wasn’t my usual style of read to listen to but I’m glad overall I persevered with it. I don’t think I would read anything else by this author though. It just wasn’t my kind of thing.

A beautiful story about grief and family dynamics, superb characterisation. But I found the narration very difficult to listen to as it was read like a poem rather than a novel. Mostly monotone. I never got used to it.

Enjoyed but narration difficult

I loved every moment of this. The characters were so beautifully developed and I connected to them all in their own ways. The ending… just a stunning novel.

My first 5 star read/audio listen of 2025.

From beginning to end, every single page this book brought a literary fiction story to life.

This is coming of age. Grief filled story of sisterhood.
This was not my normal read and the cover was the reason I bought it. The cover is a real oil painting and I love it so much.
I bought the book and audio not knowing anything about it and I honestly loved every single minute of it. There are lots of funny moments. And sad moments that are really heavy.
It actually made me think about my brothers and the way my parents brought us up. It’s a real eye opener. It has three POV. By the end I wish I could read more of them. Each sister story was so different and relatable in many ways.

This is three sisters healing and living after loosing the fourth sister.

I highly recommend it.
The audio is amazing even with the different povs you can separate them whereas sometimes I listen to a book with multiple pov I get confused lol. This I didn’t.

“They didn’t work as the three of them; they were meant to be four, and being together without Nicky only made it worse.”

Feel disappointed after finishing this book. There are moments of wonder and glimpses of the great book it could have been but it was literally held down by repetitive misery and protagonists over thinking, self obsession and weaknesses. I didn’t buy their rational and parental blame - maybe I’m the wrong generation ( baby boomer) to indulge them. But the writing carries you through.

Great writing, laboured story
