THE RETURN OF FIN MACLEOD, PETER MAY'S MUCH-LOVED HERO OF THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLING LEWIS TRILOGY.

A MURDER

The body of eighteen-year-old TV personality Caitlin is found abandoned on a remote beach at the head of An Loch Dubh - the Black Loch - on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis. A swimmer and canoeist, it is inconceivable that she could have drowned.

A SECRET

Fin Macleod left the island ten years earlier to escape its memories. When he learns that his married son Fionnlagh had been having a clandestine affair with the dead girl and is suspected of her murder, he and Marsaili return to try and clear his name.

A RECKONING

But nothing is as it seems, and the truth of the murder lies in a past that Fin would rather forget, and a tragedy at the cages of a salmon farm on East Loch Roag, where the tense climax of the story finds its resolution.

The Black Loch takes us on a journey through family ties, hidden relationships and unforgiving landscapes, where suspense, violent revenge and revelation converge in the shadow of the Black Loch.©2024 Peter May

Critic reviews

A twisty, atmospheric read
This is a powerful exploration of human depravity and excessive family loyalty, set in glorious surroundings.
Laced with melancholy, this is May at his very best . . . Do not miss it, it is unforgettable. (Daily Mail)
The Black Loch combines all the elements which propelled May to literary stardom: a likeable but deeply flawed protagonist, a plot that is centred on an island for which May clearly has an abiding love, and a narrative that unwinds slowly but surely through the inevitable twists and red herrings.
Atmospheric, evocative, tense and compelling, this thought-provoking drama is another triumph from the master of moody crime.
The brilliantly atmospheric setting of this Hebridean mystery casts a powerful spell.
An atmospheric and beautifully written book. This may be a chilling and enthralling crime thriller, but Peter May's prose is exquisite, creating a sense of place brilliantly. The imagery surrounding the natural landscape is transformative, making the setting every bit as important as character or plot.

There is absolutely nothing to disagree with on any of the Peter May books and I really hope we don’t have to wait too long for another Fin Macleod and George Gunn scenario. Have read all of my Peter May books and am now hooked on listening to Peter Forbes narrate them. Having been to Uist and Stornaway many times, like you guys say it’s like living in a film. Off to download all my enzo books and listen to them. Top notch listening thank you so much Peter and Peter

Peter May and Peter Forbes are most definitely the ultimate dream team when it comes to audiobooks! The incredible storytelling of Peter May, combined with the brilliant narration of Peter Forbes make listening to The Black Loch - An Loch Dubh, a true pleasure - as with all their previous joint collaborations. The return of Fin Macleod, Marsaili, Fionnlagh and many other familiar characters was like welcoming back old friends. The story is another masterpiece of present and past interwoven together. Peter Forbes brings all the characters to life with his incredible array of voices and accents and makes the brilliant story transform into a film within your mind. My only regret is that the book is now finished, but I do look forward to listening to all of Peter May's books again - magically narrated by Peter Forbes. The interview with the two Peters' at the end of the audiobook is wonderful to listen to as well and puts my own thoughts and feelings from over the years into words. My favourite piece of narration from Peter Forbes was when he was 'inside Tormod's head' in The Lewis Man - when Tormod was suffering from dementia. The way that he managed to subtly change his voice to represent Tormod was the most incredible piece of narration that I've heard. A true master of his craft! It would be impossible not to recommend this audiobook and all previous ones from the two Peters, highly enough! Thank you both for your individual and combined mastery!!

The ultimate literary and audiobook dream team returns with another winner!
