Violence finds its way to old Hollywood in the eleventh Josephine Tey mystery, perfect for fans of Rhys Bowen and Jacqueline Winspear.

September 1939, and the worries of war follow Josephine Tey to Hollywood, where a different sort of battle is raging on the set of Hitchcock's Rebecca.

Then a shocking act of violence reawakens the shadows of the past, with consequences on both sides of the Atlantic, and Josephine and DCI Archie Penrose find themselves on a trail leading back to the house that inspired a young Daphne du Maurier - a trail that echoes Rebecca's timeless themes of obsession, jealousy, and murder.©2023 Nicola Upson (P)2023 W. Liked! The sense of history, of atmosphere, one could almost smell the greasepaint, so many emotions which could be felt by the reader/listener. Bravo!
Disliked! Absolutely nothing.
Bring on the next instalment!

Yet another triumph for Nicola and Josephine! Excellent to the last word.

Effective evocation of Hitchcock at work on a film set. Interesting juxtaposition of events in Hollywood and in England, observed by Josephine and Archie. Well narrated, good period feel.

Intriguing sidelight on ‘Rebecca’

So many reviews mention how beautiful these books are in both prose and narration. It seems strange to describe what are essentially murder mysteries as such, but they are. Historically interesting, deep character development, sensitively looking at murders as tragedy as well as “who done it”. They are very special books and I’m always pleased when another is released. This book again brings it all together. Superb.
