Berlin. 1940. Hitler's rule casts a menacing shadow over the city. As the distant war moves closer, Criminal Inspector Horst Schenke fights to keep criminals off his patch. But he is walking a tightrope. If his secret relationship with a Jewish woman is exposed, his career will be over. And her fate will be far, far worse.

In Hitler's regime, Berlin's gangsters and pimps are more brazen than ever. When innocent victims are caught in the crossfire between warring gangs, Schenke wants the perpetrators punished. But Nazi party members with absolute power will do anything to protect their sleazy friends. They believe no one is incorruptible. All they need is to find out Schenke's secrets . . .

Will Schenke's relentless pursuit bring the criminals to justice - or is a deadly net closing around him from which it will be impossible to break free?

D.I. Schenke of the Kripo in Hitlers Germany at war. Policing and staying true to a 'moral compass' in times of Social change provides very real challenges for Schenke and his squad, and makes for a very interesting environment.
I'm looking forward to Shencke being sent to apply his flexibility to a sensitive case on Jersey and trying to navigate both Police perspectives ( perhaps even with a French 'Milice' involvement!
Every Title in this series builds on the first and follows very well indeed.
There must be a fascinating T.V. series in this!

Throughout series great characters and realistic script. Very effective narration.

I have enjoyed the series, it's a thought provoking and interesting insight to life under the Third Reich. A good person trying to do the right thing against the system . A lesson from History not to be ignored.

......but shame about pronunciation.

Having listened to the previous Schenke novels, I was excited to listen to this one, being interested in the way ordinary Germans were impacted by the war. As expected, this was excellent!

Narrator was good, as ever, having listened to his reading of other books. As a German speaker, though, could you at least get the pronunciation of the most common words correct? In particular, the correct saying of Fräulein?! It was very grating.

Fascinating History, Good story......
