About this listen

Lambing season always brings the unexpected… But no one expected murder

Jude Gray never thought she’d find herself widowed and running a working farm full-time, but here she is, living in the small Malvern village her husband Adam spent most of his life in.

After a particularly gruelling lambing season, she is looking forward to some time off, but there’s no rest for the wicked, especially when she finds the body of one of Adam’s oldest friends on her farm.

Unimpressed with the local constabulary's efforts, Jude starts an investigation of her own. But as the body count rises, danger creeps ever closer to Malvern Farm.

A killer is on the prowl. And all that stands in their way is one woman – and her dog.

- '...the wonderful detail of a farm so realistically evoked that I swear I could smell the manure, and ... the brave, determined and sympathetic character of Jude Gray herself' Frances Evesham, author of A Village Murder

'A complex and intriguing murder mystery set in beautiful British countryside where the farm animals are as demanding as the local residents. Kept me guessing all the way to the end.' T A Williams, author of Murder in Siena

'An original setting and clever plot. Had me hooked from page one.' E.V. Hunter, author of A Contest to Kill For

'A tantalising corkscrew of a plot ... featuring a plucky quartet of very different women working together to uncover the truth about a series of dreadful crimes...' Debbie Young, author of Artful Antics at St Brides

'A cryptically clever cosy mystery that will transport you to the beautiful Malvern Hills. I couldn’t put it down!' Jessica Bull, author of Miss Austen Investigates

'A hugely enjoyable and clever murder mystery.' C L Miller, author of The Antique Hunter's Guide to Murder

‘A great twisty murder mystery, cleverly done and with characters I loved spending time with…’ Kristen Perrin, author of How to Solve Your Own Murder

I very much enjoyed this one, and was sure I'd already reviewed it, but apparently not. The story is quite excellent and I enjoyed the narrator although I notice others do not agree. I did find she occasionally mispronounced things but I didn't find that too distracting and enjoyed her voice generally.
The story was interesting but Jude was often annoying, and getting herself into daft situations, but that's par for the course with this particular genre. I would certainly buy another by Kate Wells, and listen to more narrated by Ms Norfolk.

Fabulous

This has been a great story to listen to and the farm setting worked beautifully. The characters came to life very quickly for me and I found the story moved along at a nice pace, it allowed for lots of descriptive elements of the countryside and the friendships but quickly enough to keep my attention. I’m looking forward to the next story from Kate and this was beautifully read by Rebecca.

An absorbing cozy murder

I think this series will gain a following of lovers of cosy/intriguing mysteries .
Quite a lot of characters….and I think I got a bit muddled here and there 🙄
but I’ll own to it probably being my age and not the author’s fault .
Storyline complex in places and I didn’t guess the outcome ! Well worth listening to .

Enjoyable ‘ First in Series’

The bones of the story is great but it’s a bit heavy and easy to predict. The happy ending after the devastation of a whole group of friends turning out to be something other than they appeared is lovely even if unlikely. Also the effect on the farm of the loss of the shepherd for three days doesn’t seem to cause much of a problem??
However all in all I enjoyed this story and the different clues. I liked the comfort the sisters gave one another. The angle of a small child’s new eyes and innocent joy at each new experience.
There are a lot of ways this story can move forward. I really hope the next in the series is as much fun.

A good gentle mystery

This is an engrossing, well-written mystery with a brilliantly drawn cast of characters. First in a series, so I look forward to the rest.
