WINNER OF THE CRIME FICTION BOOK OF THE YEAR AT THE BRITISH BOOK AWARDS 2024

A blistering contemporary thriller with a real message for our polarised times from Abir Mukherjee, the award-winning author of the Wyndham and Banerjee series.

YOU CAN'T SAVE YOUR KIDS. BUT CAN YOU STOP THEM?

It's a week before the presidential elections when a bomb goes off in an LA shopping mall.
In London, armed police storm Heathrow Airport and arrest Sajid Khan. His daughter, Aliyah entered the USA with the suicide bomber, and now she's missing, potentially plotting another attack on American soil.
But then a woman called Carrie turns up at Sajid's door after travelling halfway across the world. She claims Aliyah is with her son and she has a clue to their whereabouts. Carrie knows something isn't adding up - and that she and Sajid are the only ones who can find their children and discover the truth.
On the run from the authorities, the two parents are thrown together in a race against time to save their kids and stop a catastrophe that will derail the country's future forever.
For fans of Adrian McKinty's The Chain and Clare Mackintosh's Hostage, this blockbuster contemporary thriller will turn your world on its head.

'A high-octane, high-adrenaline thriller…Chillingly plausible' ERIN KELLY

I suspect this book is a bit marmite. I found the plot predictable and in some places the situations that the characters found themselves were solved to simplisticly or conveniently.
I initially liked the idea that the book follows the perspectives of the different characters involved in the story but in the end this was probably it's overall weakness, as there were too many moments where I felt the story stretched plausibility. I don't mind suspending my disbelief and will pretty much allow any author artistic licence to tell their story, but I found myself too often rolling my eyes at the story as it progressed.

The narrators were a little flat in their acting and the accents they did were distracting too often. All the characters seemed like they had come through a media training course as they all seemed to lack emotion in key moments of the story.

It's a shame because I have liked several of this authors books very much.

An interesting premise but a tad far fetched and predictable.

I loved this author's other books, but I'm sorry to say this one just didn't match up to his usual high standards.

Sorry.A bit of a miss.

I was completely hooked from start to finish. I’m a new to audible but my wife insisted I listen to it. I found the narrators utterly absorbing. How they swap and change accents so seamlessly incredible. If you’re looking to be enticed by plot twists galore then look no further. When does the sequel come out?

A very predictable story

This book is certainly gripping from beginning to end. It’s suspenseful, unpredictable, everything you want a thriller to be. There are political aspects both uk and USA, this book is incredibly powerful. Loved it.

A thriller that gives voice to those impacted by United States wars, participants in them, victims and those challenging. Very moving

Terrific change of direction with this new story from Abir Mukherjee

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

A thrilling and thoughtful read, which convincingly addresses the grey areas of both terrorism and patriotism. Beautifully acted out in audiobook

Tense, gripping, uncompromising

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

All the action is offstage. Very slow for a thriller!
Lack of an ending always enraging!

Disappointing
