About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

A sizzling fantasy romance from the No.1 Sunday Times bestseller & TikTok sensation Danielle Jensen, perfect for fans of Sarah J Maas & A Court of Thorns and Roses.

Trapped in an unwanted marriage, Freya dreams of becoming a warrior – and of putting an axe in her controlling husband’s back.

But those dreams become a nightmare when he makes a deal with their fanatical ruler, and she’s forced into a fight to the death. To survive, she must reveal her deepest secret: she possesses a drop of a goddess’s blood and magic that will unite their nation beneath the one who controls her fate.

Believing he’s destined to be king, the ruler binds Freya with a blood oath and orders his fierce but charming son to train her to fight, to control her magic . . . and to make sure no one lays a hand on her.

But the greatest test of all may be resisting her forbidden attraction to the son of her enemy.

I wasn’t as captivated as I wish I could have been. The narrator was great but the middle part of the story I just wasn’t invested in.

It was alright. Narration saved it

Excellent narration and a great story so far! It felt like I was watching a Viking movie listening to this book. Can’t wait for book 2 now!

Thrilling!

It’s the narrator that really makes this story - brings all the magic of the Norse mythology to life! The plot itself is interesting and easy to immerse yourself in, though very predictable and a little frustratingly slow at times. But will definitely still read the second book of the duology when it comes out in the summer to see how our characters’ fates unravel!

Enjoyable story made brilliant by narration!

I highly recommend the Audiobook, it was great! , Nina Yndis did a great job with her multi POV performance (I had to go back to the audiobook details to confirm there was only one narrator 😲 )

This was my first book of Danielle L. Jensen and I couldn’t put it down!

I heard so much about this book and being I think, the first “adult” book she has released. I picked it up and was so pleasantly surprised. What a nice ride. I loved Danielle’s approached on the Viking culture and lore and how this was incorporated into this story.

The FMC, Freya, Freya had dreams of being a warrior, to go to battle and gain the warrior’s glory but she had to put that part of herself aside to fit into the female expectation of her culture, for the good of her husband, family and village.
So, she is resigned to her fate of a loveless and abusive marriage, forever destined to live on the sidelines. Until one day all changes for her and a completely different path open for her.

The MMC, Bjørn, one of the best depiction of a Scandinavian/Viking warrior; he’s witty, cocky, protective and morally grey. A character that you think you have all figured out, but he is an enigma with a complicated past, constantly defying Freya’s expectations and assumptions about him. He is fantastic!

I think that it was easy to get immerse in the story, the romance is built slowly throughout the story and it is beautiful written; a witty slow burn

I have given it an overall 🌶️🌶️, but I am also used to very spice “food”, so maybe it will get higher marks by others.

I was not expecting it to end in a cliffhanger, nicely done…. I am ready for book 2.

Amazing vibe - Viking/Norse mythology romantasy!
