About this listen

In the seaside town of Kinlough, on Ireland's west coast, three old friends are thrown together for the first time in years. They—Helen, Joe and Mush—were part of an original group of six inseparable teenagers in the summer of 2003, with motherless, reckless Kala Lanann as their group's white-hot center. Soon after that summer's peak, Kala disappeared without a trace.

Now it's fifteen years later: Helen has reluctantly returned to Ireland for her father's wedding; Joe is a world-famous musician, newly back in town; and Mush has never left, too scared to venture beyond the counter of his mother's café. But human remains have been discovered in the woods. Two more girls have gone missing. And as past and present begin to collide, the estranged friends are forced to confront their own complicity in the events that led to Kala's disappearance, and to try to stop Kinlough's violent patterns repeating themselves once again...

Against the backdrop of a town suffocating on its own secrets, in a story that builds from a smoulder to a stunning climax, Kala brilliantly examines the sometimes brutal costs of belonging, as well as the battle in the human heart between vengeance and forgiveness, despair and redemption.

Loved it - felt like I was there…the advantage of an audiobook is hearing the beautiful accents. Disadvantage - you can flip back to the character list at the start as new people come on the scene

Brilliant

I cried at the end, won't give anything away, but I was entirely engrossed in the lives of these characters for the time it took me to read the book.
The three narrators are convincing and authentic, the story is tender, but brutal, almost savage. I'd have like to have known Kala, she sounds cool, unique and loyal.

Intense, original and gripping

The author’s writing builds the characters so well that u really care about them and u want to understand what happened and why. Brutal scenes…great plot

Loved it, narration was great, each character was portrayed brilliantly. It's edgy, heartbreaking, nostalgic, terrifying and wholesome all in one book. Beautiful.

Best book in a long time

Hard to believe this is his first novel. Outstanding characters, and characterisation of a town and country over 15yrs. The performances were en pointe. Very talented.
Minor quibbles: time randomly going back and forth, within the chapters. Sometimes made it difficult to know what year it was until you got a bit deeper, so I think that took a bit away as the tension was dissipated by you wondering where you were.
Also had to get used to the three characters told in different voices, 1st and 3rd persons.
Apart from that, I think this book will be with me for a long time…

What an amazing engrossing story!
