About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Whether you are neurodivergent, suspect you might be, or want to be a better ally, UNMASKED will help you make sense of it all, and put the power in your hands.

Ellie was 24 when she learned she wasn't broken. She wasn't a bad person, she was neurodivergent. Her late diagnosis of ADHD and autism was like a lightbulb being switched on and she could finally start to heal from the trauma of being un-diagnosed and mis-understood for so long.

Since getting her diagnosis, Ellie has made it her mission to change the way we think about autism, ADHD and neurodivergence and in UNMASKED she shares what she has learned along her journey.

Written in a bite-sized style for whizzy brains like hers, Ellie shares chapters on mental health, pretty privilege, how to navigate the workplace and the importance of self-diagnosis so that we can all better understand and celebrate neurodivergence, and ultimately make the world a more inclusive place.

As an adult who has recently become aware I'm autistic, there is surprisingly little out in there in terms of of what to do for support, what it means to be autistic, or how to start removing the mask. I tried and failed to get through Dr Devon Price's unmasking book, and found this one to be far more objective, practical, and relatable. I especially appreciated the support at work chater, and will be taking some of these suggestions to my employer. Thanks Ellie for sharing your story.

The unmasking book I was looking for

I am a mum of a 10 yo, who has been asking me for the past 3 years why life is so hard for him and not for others. When he made his first friend at the age of 9, he was shining. It was the best couple of months of my life. When he was told to ‘go away, you are so annoying’ we both cried. I was convinced he ‘simply’ suffers from social anxiety. I don’t know whether he is autistic or not, but this book has opened up so many new opportunities and possibilities in understanding him (and himself) better - I am really grateful and cannot wait to continue learning and educating others about neurodiversity. Thank you very much Ellie.

Wow, just wow

I have read several many books about Neurodiversity since my diagnosis. But I think this has to be the most affirming of all of them. It is full of kindness, good solid useful information and hope! And I loved it.

Wonderful Useful Affirming book

Thanh you for writing this book and scaring your story, Ellie. My 13-year-old daughter has recently been diagnosed with AuDHD and masks hugely, so much so that no one believes her when she tells them about her diagnoses. She is slowly beginning to share her diagnosis more widely and beginning her journey to live a more authentic life. This book was hugely helpful. Thank you.
