About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Addictive, brilliantly written and utterly irresistible,
The Book of Doors is a spell-binding, mind-bending, heart-pounding new adventure that is perfect for fans of The Binding, The Midnight Library and A Discovery of Witches . . .

Because some doors should never be opened.

New York bookseller Cassie Andrews is not sure what she’s doing with her life. She lives quietly, sharing an apartment with her best friend, Izzy. Then a favourite customer gives her an old book. Full of strange writing and mysterious drawings, at the very front there is a handwritten message:

This is the Book of Doors. Hold it in your hand, and any door is every door.

Cassie is about to discover that the Book of Doors is a special book – a magic book. A book that bestows extraordinary abilities on whoever possesses it. And she is about to learn that there are other magic books out there that can also do wondrous – or dreadful and terrifying – things.

Because where there is magic there is power and there are those who will stop at nothing to possess it.

Suddenly Cassie and Izzy are confronted by violence and danger, and the only person who can help them is Drummond Fox who has a secret library of magical books hidden in the shadows for safekeeping, a man fleeing his own demons. Because there is a nameless evil out there that is hunting them all . . .

Because this book is worth killing for.

I really like the ideas behind this book. Books with different powers being hunted by book collectors is great fun. The problem was I wasn’t keen on the writing. There’s just something a bit juvenile about it. That’s fine if you want something to waste a few hours but be entertained but I’d hoped for something more meaty. The thing with time travel is there are a lot of things to sort out before it’s believable and I feel like the author copped out in places. There are a few repetitive but uncomfortable scenes at the start where he bangs on about how much the secondary female character eats and he seems to think his male lead’s incessant search for whisky is a personality trait. It’s just an addiction.

Not quite worth the hype.

as kids we wished we had powers to make people do what we want or travel through doors to imaginary worlds that's what intrigued me I think, the main characters are quirky and relatable and the bad guys downright nasty and evil, gets a bit confusing with the back and forwards story telling on the time travel scene's but all in all a good story.

Literally from page 1 this book had my complete attention. So different from anything else I've read lately, this adventure had me grasped in its unfolding telling. Goodness knows how the author managed to produce & deliver such a compelling tale with parallels to the nature of the real world.
Highly recommended.

Beautifully written. Best read of the year so far. Love the connections and interlinking surprises. Fab ending! Brought emotions to the surface. Absolutely unputdownable.

Brilliant story, clever ideas, totally gripping. I couldn’t stop listening to it, until it was done.

The incredible narration in this book. I’ve listened to hundreds of books, but none of the narrators has been as good as this,
