Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Maggie Bird is many things. A chicken farmer. A good neighbour. A seemingly average retiree living in the seaside town of Purity. She's also a darned good rifle shot. And she never talks about her past.
But when an unidentified body is left on Maggie's driveway, she knows it's a calling card from old times. It's been fifteen years since the failed mission that ended her career as a spy, and cost her far more than her job.
Step forward the 'Martini Club' - Maggie's silver-haired book group (to anyone who asks), and a cohort of former spies behind closed doors. With the help of her old friends - and always one step ahead of the persistent local cop - Maggie might still be able to save the life she's built.
The Spy Coast is the first novel in The Martini Club series.

Great story, poor narration
I really love the story of this book. It didn’t try to be Rizzoli and Isles, it did something different, and I really enjoyed the plot.
The accents, particularly the English accent of the narrator, was horrific! To the point, I thought it was trying to demonstrate people were pretending to be English and I got a little confused. The narration needs some work, but the story is great.

Lacks the magic of the original Rizzoli and Isles books
A passable story that could lead to a really good new series however like many of the latest garrettston books it doesn't quite have the charm and catch that the initial R&I books had.
The performance is mostly good however the English accent that pops up quite often is absolutely appalling.

Good story, shame about the narration
I enjoyed the story but had I known how bad the narrator’s English accent was I would probably have chosen to read this one. It really pulled me out of those sections of the book and I spent more time thinking about how bad the narration was instead of concentrating on what was happening in the plot. I would have preferred the narrator to not even attempt the accent.

The narrators grating voice
The narration was awful, the eternal sing song lilt of the narrator, through happy and sad, passion and terror was infuriating.

Flashback books, a no for me
I am a fan of Tess Gerritsen's books but this one fell a bit flat for me. I'm not a fan of books with flashbacks and this was the majority of this book. I didn't really care about the characters either and the mirroring of Maggie and Jo did not work - young v older and the young not realising the potential of the older. Jo was a non entity in the book. She didn't really amount to much. Maggie as a senior woman had so much potential but the focus was mainly on the past and on her younger years. As a senior Maggie and the other seniors had so much more to offer.
Amazon has bought the rights to this as a series so that might work and there is so much potential with the setting and the other characters.

Good story, awful narration
Really enjoyed the story - Tess Gerritsen is always reliable. However, the narration of the British accents is painful! They are really distracting and I wish I had read, rather than listened to, this book. Such a shame.

Great romp spoilt by terrible narrator!
Along the lines of the Thursday Murder Club but in Jessica Fletcher land with a harder edge. However, one narrator’s quest to put every English accent into one character at the same time ruins it. This is truly the worst accent ever performed and if it weren’t meant to be serious it would be hilarious. How this was released is unbelievable, even Americans would laugh at this, sadly it’s a major character and spoils an otherwise enjoyable book. Never use this actor again if you don’t want refunds!
