About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Aiden Aslin joined the Ukrainian marines in 2018, compelled to defend his adopted homeland from the growing threat of Russian invasion. In February 2022, as Russia mounted a full-scale offensive, Aiden and his unit were stationed at the frontline at Mariupol.

Pinned down at a Mariupol steelworks, after a month-long siege and running out of supplies, Aiden was part of the mass surrender of over a thousand Ukrainian troops, in April 2022. Then his real ordeal began.

Singled out for his British passport, Aiden was interrogated, tortured, stabbed, turned into a propaganda zombie, tried by a kangaroo court and then sentenced to death. A victim of a catalogue of abuses of international law, Aiden struggled to cling on to any hope of survival. Certain that he was going to be executed, he was eventually freed in a prisoner exchange and permitted to return home.

In Putin's Prisoner, Aiden will tell the full, harrowing story of his time fighting in Putin's war, of his six months in Russian captivity, and of his hardened resolve to defend the freedoms of the people of Ukraine.

I followed Aiden’s story from just before his capture to his release but without the knowledge of what was going on behind the scenes. Truly horrific, but so glad he lived to tell his story on behalf of those who are still going through that horror today.

. . . especially those arguing that russia is somehow are not to blame, that are somehow the good guys.

What Aiden went through, all he suffered at the hands of russians, makes this a really tough listen but it's essential, especially with all the misinformation that russia is putting out there, and is being transmitted in the west by their agents, who are often in position of power (especially in the US).

A must listen to . . .

Incitefull and intriguing, the story of Aiden of the events leading upto, during and after captivity. Probably wouldn’t get this much truth elsewhere.

Great Book

This was a story that tells of the torture the Ukrainian prisoners were put through, the utmost bravery of these guys, but told in a most concise way by Aiden, a UK resident who joined the Ukrainian marines to fight a unjust war, he strongly believed in

Fantastic story of the upmost bravery and the disgusting treatment from the Russian state!!

I enjoyed the book, true stories appeal to me. I’m familiar with these prison torture tactics, I was born & raised in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe. I would really like to introduce Aiden to Rusty Labuschagne (his book - Beating Chains)

What a strong man Aiden is
