An angsty second-chance forbidden romance.

He was my boyfriend’s best friend—and the bane of my existence. I wanted to hate Luke Taylor. I did hate him. I just never hated him enough.

Now, a decade later, tragedy has brought us back to the place where it all happened—my best times and my worst.

Our lives have changed, but that pull between us is just as strong as ever.

Only this time, it’s more dangerous too.

I love Elizabeth O'Roark's writing. She never disappoints. The Summer We Fell is beautifully written, and engaging. Luke and Juliet’s story is emotional, gripping, and raw. The back and forth, past to present is captivating. I liked this heartbreaking second chance forbidden boyfriend's best friend romance, filled with angst, and secrets. The characters are well developed, and interesting. Samantha Brentmoor and Teddy Hamilton did an outstanding job bringing this story to life. They are on my list of favorite narrators.

Wow this was such a bittersweet story my emotions were all over the place! This story spans across ten years with alternating timelines.

Juliet has had such a tragic upbringing (please check TWs!) and just can’t seem to catch a break. She runs away from home as a teenager and is taken in by her boyfriends family who are devout Christians. One summer her boyfriend Danny, brings home his best friend Luke. Immediately there is a connection between the two which is much stronger than the bond Juliette has with Danny.

Overtime their feelings grow for one another even though they never really spent time alone to begin with, but they just seem to understand one another due to their similar pasts. Luke is so attuned to whatever Juliette goes through and is protective of her. He goes above and beyond for her too, more so than Danny ever did.

This book is the exact definition of right person wrong time. When tragedy strikes time and time again Luke and Juliette are having to sacrifice the life they want to have in order to keep others happy and when a major incident occurs it leads to the two of them separating for 7 years. The same thing that kept them apart is what beings them back, but can it rekindle their relationship?

You can expect a lot of heartbreak, anguish, longing and lusting. There is cheating in this book but the MCs don’t cheat on each other if that makes sense. Although cheating is never justified I feel that this was the only way that Juliette and Luke were able to be together in secret. I do feel like the ending was a little rushed considered so much time was spent on getting to the climatic scene but overall this novel explored a unique kind of love story. As always I loved the narration from Teddy Hamilton!

This one is full of angst, but it's just the right amount to keep you on your toes and wanting more. I was sucked into the story right away and wanted to know more about these characters and their ins and outs and how they got where they are. The back and forth between the past and present really helped the story build and keep you guessing.

The two narrators for the audiobook did a phenomenal job. Though the book is fully from the FMCs POV, the addition of the make voice really added to the immersion. I highly suggest giving this one a listen!

So good

The Summer We Fell is my very first Elizabeth book I’ve read, so I was very excited to listen. I love both Samantha and Teddy too. Told in duet narration, which I’ll admit isn’t my favourite, it did take a few chapters to get used to it.

Juliet and Luke, both haven’t had the best of upbringings. Juliet at 15 is fostered in by the Pastor, his wife and their son Danny. Soon she finds herself kind of trapped in their midst, trying to belong, singing in the choir, working away, trying to be good and behave like she should. It isn’t until she meets Luke, Daniel’s best friend one summer, that the cracks seem to appear. It’s Luke that can see through her, it’s him that knows she doesn’t want to be trapped in this life, a life that she’s so thankful for, a family that love her. He knows she needs to flee the cage and fly away.

This story is told in alternative Then and Now chapters, so you do need to concentrate whilst listening. It is a slow burn romance and very angsty at times. I did get quite frustrated with the way that Juliet, in particular dealt with her decisions. I did also find the ending somewhat of an anticlimax…I was just expecting more.

Samantha’s narration was absolutely fantastic, I couldn’t fault her at all. Teddy, although excellent as usual, I just felt like he was wasted…or maybe not needed at all. Samantha could have done the whole book all on her own and it still would have been excellent. I think to have a duet narration, it would help if there were actual POV chapters, in this case from Luke’s POV.

Anyway, I found this was a good love triangle with second chance romance.
