The first in a gripping new historical fantasy series that intertwines Irish mythology with real-life history, The Children of Gods and Fighting Men is the thrilling debut novel by Shauna Lawless.
They think they've killed the last of us...

981 AD. The Viking King of Dublin is dead. His young widow, Gormflaith, has ambitions for her son – and herself – but Ireland is a dangerous place and kings tend not to stay kings for long. Gormflaith also has a secret. She is one of the Fomorians, an immortal race who can do fire-magic. She has kept her powers hidden at all costs, for there are other immortals in this world – like the Tuatha Dé Danann, a race of warriors who are sworn to kill Fomorians.

Fódla is one of the Tuatha Dé Danann with the gift of healing. Her kind dwell hidden in a fortress, forbidden to live amongst the mortals. Fódla agrees to help her kin by going to spy on Brian Boru, a powerful man who aims to be High King of Ireland. She finds a land on the brink of war – a war she is desperate to stop. However, preventing the loss of mortal lives is not easy with Ireland in turmoil and the Fomorians now on the rise...

This was a brilliant series that deserves far more critical acclaim. Irish history meets mythology, GOT vibes but mainly from the female perspective. so refreshing and you just do not know what is coming next.

One of the best books I've read

I wasn't sure this would be my type of book, but I was swayed due to the narrator being Aoife McMahon, who has a beautiful accent (accents in this case) and a voice that soothes and helps relaxation. That said, she can do a vicious warrior and exciting bits when appriopriate! I often search by narrator name which helps me to discover books I may not have listened to otherwise. This book has an interesting story-line and although I was concerned it would involve more fighting, it didn't. I'm going to order the sequel now. Also, having toured Ireland in the last two summers, including staying at Killaloe, it helped to bring the scenery to life.

Hesitated to buy, but pleased I did

It’s very hard to find any fiction books based on Irish mythology, any other kind all you do is throw a rock and you hit a Norse or Greek or Shinto etc mythology no problem but besides that it’s even harder to find an Irish mythology book that’s entertaining but thank the Gods for Shauna Lawless she cracked the code. Straight away your taken into the book, great characters, great heroes and villains and a great story and best of all she has another two books in the series after this one. Highly recommend and special mention to the voice actress, she was fab, her talent really drew me into the story.

Great book
