Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

One house. Nine guests. Endless motives for murder...

In the seaside town of Hamlet Wick, nine guests assemble for a New Year's Eve party to remember.

The owner of Hamlet Hall has organised a murder mystery evening with a 1920s twist, and everyone has their own part to play.

But the game has barely begun when one guest is found dead—killed by a fatal injury to the head.

With no phone signal and no way out of the house, the others are trapped with a killer in their midst.

Someone is playing by their own rules. And in a close-knit community, old rivalries run deep...

It was okay

I thought it was quite promising at the start but when it got to the middle, I felt myself starting to feel less engaged in the story. I had also thought that the killer was quite predictable from the start but continued just to see how it will end. Overall it was okay.

Wrong voice actor

The voice actor is a fantastic voice actor, but he’s the wrong choice for this book. His accent is too strongly London, which really doesn’t fit for most of the characters in this book.

The book itself is alright, not something I’d be in a rush to read again, but equally not the worst book ever.

Enjoyable

While I enjoyed listening to this book, I wasn’t particularly fond of any of the characters and it wasn’t as captivating as I expected given the great premise. Definitely worth a credit, well written and narrated.

Bored narrator

The story is ok, but a struggle to listen to narrator. He sounds bored and the characters have similar accents.

Missing Devon accents!

Great story, romps along and lovely narration it just feels strange not to have any Devonian accents in a remote Devon village!

Quite disappointing

The story was fine and I quite enjoyed the ending but it was a bit of a slog to get there. Too many dislikable characters and information being kept secret for the sake of a reveal rather than for a natural reason. Found the narration quite jarring too unfortunately.

Enjoyable Murder Story with a Classic Feel

I really enjoyed the style of the writing and narration of this story. It has all the makings of a really classic Whodunnit.
I was able to figure it out fairly early on but I was still completely captivated to the end. This story is less about the police officer and more about the characters and their relationships which I really enjoyed.
The only sad point for me is that after enjoying this story so much I was keen to hear more from this author but the reviews for 'A Fatal Crossing' all say the narrator chosen for that story ruins it. So hopefully I shall have to find time in the future to read that one for myself.
