Nik has lots of questions about his late father but knows better than to ask his mother, Avani. It's their unspoken rule.

But when his grandfather dies, Nik has the opportunity to learn about the man he never met. Armed with a key and new knowledge about his parents' past, Nik sets out to unlock the secrets that his mother has been holding onto his whole life.

The Things That We Lost is a beautifully tender exploration of family, loss and how far we will go to protect the ones we love.

Wonderful writing, beautifully read and articulated by Nikesh and Nikki - the pace of speech and the warmth, emotion and environmental colour/vision provided by the tone of your voices really allowed me to be immersed in the story.

This is a beautiful book and one of the best books I have listened to in a long time. I have recommended to all the book lovers that I know. A brilliant insight into different cultures and rich in description. Looking forward to more from Jyoti Patel.

Very impressive, more so because it’s a debut novel. Look forward to reading more from this author

Brilliant debut

Having suffered the loss of a parent myself in the last 18 months, the story for me was a tragic series of events ending in a “warm hug” reminding me that love and understanding will help find our way no matter what happens

Lovely heart warming story

A sad story of a family enveloped in historical grief.
To be honest, every book I have read that has an Indian backdrop (regardless of story line), is usually colourful and vibrant. Although the story was "Ok," I found it to be drab and a bit on the dull side. I kept losing concentration and found myself zoning out and had to keep rewinding. I preserved and got to the end, but I was a bit disappointed.

A bit bland...
