WANTED: A bloodmaid of exceptional taste. Must have a keen proclivity for life's finer pleasures. Girls of weak will need not apply.

A young woman is drawn into the upper echelons of a society where blood is power, in this dark and enthralling Gothic novel from the author of The Year of the Witching.

Marion Shaw has been raised in the slums, where want and deprivation are all she knows. Despite longing to leave the city and its miseries, she has no real hope of escape until the day she spots a strange advertisement in the newspaper, seeking a 'bloodmaid'.

Though she knows little about the far north—where wealthy nobles live in luxury and drink the blood of those in their service—Marion applies to the position. In a matter of days, she finds herself at the notorious House of Hunger. There, Marion is swept into a world of dark debauchery—and there, at the centre of it all is her.

Her name is Countess Lisavet. Loved and feared in equal measure, she presides over this hedonistic court. And she takes a special interest in Marion. Lisavet is magnetic, charismatic, seductive—and Marion is eager to please her new mistress. But when her fellow bloodmaids begin to go missing in the night, Marion is thrust into a vicious game of cat and mouse. She'll need to learn the rules of her new home—and fast—or its halls will soon become her grave.

Possible Spoiler alert:A wonderful story, very unpredictable which is so refreshing. My one comment is.. the author could have expanded on Lisabet and Marion’s ‘romance’, hooking the reader in more, into their ‘genuine’ love for each other. The ending would have been mind blowing instead of shocking. Instead the beginning was building up to the wanted romance.., then suddenly it’s established and it seems like a gloss over, the author focusing more on the whole story, instead of building up the possible emotions of characters etc. just a missed opportunity to have the readers roiling. It’s a good story. The performance was spot on. The accents really good!

Great story, well performed

Overall I thought this was a good story but I couldn’t help but feel I hungered for more. I feel the story lacked character relationship building it just seemed to be one minute your the new girl the next she is besotted with you. I don’t feel like there was enough given to you about any of the character relationships and the building of them. I did have a constant feeling of distrust which is maybe what is meant to be felt
There where parts of the story which I felt was so right and then parts I was disappointed at.
Sometimes when you read a story and it’s too descriptive and your like can you please get to your point I feel this hadn’t quite found the balance between just enough description, character development and world building but it still didn’t get to the point at the same time.

The world building is fantastic, and great re-imaging of the vampire genera with clear comments on power and wealth while creating a dark interesting atmosphere that keeps you hooked.

Great gothic sapphic horror
