Named a Best Book of the Year by Vox and Autostraddle

Making a much-anticipated return to the world of Hild, Nicola Griffith’s Menewood transports readers back to seventh-century Britain, a land of rival kings and religions poised for epochal change.

Hild is no longer the bright child who made a place in Edwin Overking’s court with her seemingly supernatural insight. She is eighteen, honed and tested, the formidable lady of Elmet, now building her personal stronghold in the valley of Menewood.

But old alliances are fraying. Younger rivals are snapping at Edwin’s heels. War is brewing—bitter war, winter war. Not knowing whom to trust, Edwin becomes volatile and recalls his young advisor to court. There Hild begins to understand the true extent of the chaos ahead—and realizes she must find a way to navigate the turbulence and fight to protect both the kingdom and her own people.

She will face the losses and devastation of total war, and then must summon the determination to forge a radically different path for herself and her people. In the valley, her last redoubt, Hild draws strength from the fierce joy she finds in the natural world, as, slowly, her community takes root. She trains herself and her unexpected allies in new ways of thinking, learning what it means to gather and wield true power. And she prepares for one last wager: risking all on a single throw for a better future.

In the last decade, Hild has become a beloved classic of epic storytelling. Menewood exceeds it in every way.

Nicola Griffith gives us a story that is truly epic in it's scope but full of intricate detail. This takes the story of Hilde onwards and surpasses the earlier book in every way. The narration is spot-on and I was engrossed for everyone of those 28 hours!

A richly detailed epic

'Hild' was a great read. 'Menewood' goes deeper into the 7th century world of Anglo Saxon life, from high politics to the daily round of making ends meet. At its centre is this wonderful creation, a re-imagining of Hilda Ito a strong, wise and still very human woman. A wonderful tale, beautifully narrated.

Much more than a sequel

Magnificent, harrowing, richly textured sequel to Hild, as she tries to protect her people and her place from a disaster only she can see coming, but loses more than she can almost bear.

it was a pleasure to spend these 29 hours with adult Hild. The world, the story, Hild's journey, it's all woven beautifully. A great continuation to the first book.

I am so looking forward to more 😁

Gripping and thoughtful, great historical fiction

The story is utterly heartbreaking and engrossing, and it really brings the early Middle Ages to life in terms of both ideas and religions of the time and of practicalities (need a dress? Well, someone needs to spin the wool, weave and dye the cloth, and sew it by hand. And clean it by hand...) The narrator is INCREDIBLE! All the accents and voices are distinct, so it's easy to understand who is speaking. For a second there, I was offended that the Frisian in the story has a German accent, but then research taught me that "Frisia encompassed far more at the time than it does now (i.e. also parts of what is now Germany). I LOVE this narrator, and I hope she will do more historical novels. She is fantastic at it. Brava!

Riveting!
