This is a story about REAL WITCHES.

Real witches dress in ordinary clothes, have ordinary jobs and look very much like ordinary people.

But they are far from ORDINARY . . .

The Grand High Witch, leader of all the witches, has a plan to make each and every child disappear.

That is, unless one boy and his grandmother can stop her . . .

I adored this book when it came out and used to read at least once a year. I think it's one of Roald Dahls best stories (for children anyway). The audiobooks have been so many times that it is tricky to get the perfact narrator. Simon Callow did it years ago which was ok but I was initially pleased when I saw that a version with Miranda Richardson. Big mistake. Her voice of the grand high witch was so bad, you could barely understand it.
Seeing a new version, I decided to try again as I like Lolly in other things. It's great - phew!
She gets the right balances between "normal" narration and with all the characters. She doesn't overdo them to the point it's distracting. The only thing that lets it down is Grandmas accent - she sounds more like a Queen impersonator, but I think I'd rather that than an attempt at a Norwegian accent. She reads at a good pace and seems to enjoy reading it. I am aware that these are supposed to be for children and I think because of the clarity in Lolly's voice, kids would find it very easy to listen to. She is able to convey the "scary" bits really well so I think even younger children would be ok. However, I don't see why adults shouldn't still enjoy Dahls books - whether kids or adults (I have all of the latter!)...

Finally, the right narrator
