About this listen

A Richard & Judy Book Club Pick

Immerse yourself in The 6:20 Man, a heart-racing thriller with an incredible ending, set in the world of high finance in New York. From David Baldacci, the number one bestselling author of Memory Man.

It's time to catch a killer . . .

Having survived combat tours in Afghanistan and Iraq and been decorated with medals, Travis Devine leaves the army in mysterious circumstances, under a cloud of suspicion. And at thirty-two years old, he’s swapping fighting the Taliban and Al-Qaeda for a different kind of danger in the cut-throat world of high finance.

His daily commute on the 6:20 a.m. train into New York’s financial district, to his new job as an analyst at the powerhouse investment bank Cowl and Comely, takes him into a world where greed, power, jealousy and ambition result in the financial abuse of the masses and the enrichment of an elite few.

When a close friend of Devine’s is found dead, the mysterious circumstances surrounding her death at Cowl and Comely compel him to investigate further. As he digs deeper, he discovers strange coincidences and unnerving truths.

As the deaths pile up, and the major players show their hands, Travis must question who he can trust – and who he must fight . . .

The action continues in The Edge, the second Travis Devine thriller from David Baldacci.

Baldacci never disappoints. I love that the “goody” in this story is such a mensch. Excellent research. We’ll worth the time.

So clever!

The story is... okay. There are some ludicrous character behaviours (i.e. people behaving in a manner that seems incredibly unlikely - given other circumstances). That said - it's a satisfyingly entertaining story. The narration would have been better if it had just been left to a single person - some of the dialogue was very disjointed - almost as if the parts had been recorded separately... (I know, I know - but it shouldn't sound like it was done like that). Zachary Webber's narration in particular was excellent.

A little more than the sum of its parts...

Apart from a couple of ‘why would they do/say that?’ moments it’s a good read and excellently narrated by the cast. I’ll read the next one.

A decent, well paced detective novel

Really enjoyed this book full of twists and turns with a complete surprise at the end, espionage in its infancy but brilliant all the same, narration by all was very good and added to the characters

Compelling intriguing engaging murder mystery

I like Baldacci's work. This kept me engaged and I kept looking for opportunities for solitude so I could progress listening to the story. The detailed description of what everyone was wearing got a but tiresome, as well as the fact that all the women were hot. The ending was a very unexpected twist but left me frustrated with the number of plot holes that it gave rise to.

Worth a listen
