About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Based on the No 1 hit podcast 'The Lazarus Heist'

Meet the Lazarus Group, a shadowy cabal of hackers accused of working on behalf of the North Korean state. It's claimed that they form one of the most dangerous criminal enterprises on the planet, having stolen more than $1bn in an international crime spree. Their targets allegedly include central banks, Hollywood film studios and even the British National Health Service. North Korea denies the allegations, saying the accusations are American attempts to tarnish its image.

In this staggering, global investigation, award-winning journalist Geoff White examines how the hackers have harnessed cutting-edge technology to launch a decade-long campaign of brazen and merciless raids on its richer, more powerful adversaries. It's not just money they're after. The Lazarus Group's tactics have been used to threaten democracies, gag North Korea's critics and destabilize global peace.

From the bustling streets of Dhaka, to the glamorous studios of Hollywood, to the glittering casinos of Macau and the secretive dynastic court of Pyongyang, this shocking story uncovers the secret world of the Lazarus Group, their victims and the people who have tried—and ultimately, so far failed—to stop them.

this is a fantastic listen and a meticulously researched piece of work. Geoff White has written a true eye-opener into North Korea's prowess in tech, hacking, money and payments, as well as its ability to think strategically and outwit opponents of much greater size and wealth.

superb work

... you'll love this book. I must admit, i was a little sceptical (having been such a big fan of the podcast) that the book might simply be a rehash of what had come before, or worse, it might be more or less the same without the sound effects and production behind it. But, i'm pleased to say, I couldn't have been more impressed with the book.

The structure is great, and good cross reference points are built in, with the author identifying and referring back to examples, theory and topics covered elsewhere in the book, so you never really lose your way. This book could also hide behind jargon and emerging and advanced technologies, but it doesn't - it really is very accessible. Everything is explained so clearly, you can't help but learn something new by listening/reading to this.

Even if your interest in cyber crimes is limited, i would recommend this book as it just doesn't disappoint.

Very interesting and a good read. The things that this country is up to and no-one seems able or willing to stop them. They are going to cause serious issues one day, even worse than mentioned in here.

Scary what North Korea is up to
