About this listen
A sexy mistaken-identity forbidden sports romance!
After my last romance turned into a dumpster fire, I did the only reasonable thing - I swore off men for all of eternity. So my bestie said she did the only reasonable thing - she signed me up for a freaking dating app. I thought it was a joke. But after too many martinis, I committed a cardinal sin. I slid into the DMs of the first eye-roll-inducing profile I found - @BigDeckEnergy.
With a name like that, how could I resist giving him a piece of my mind?
I never expected him to write back. I also never expected to like him.
- His body? Sexy as hell.
- Handle? Cocky.
- Accent? Did I mention he’s British?
- Personality? Funny, sweet, and witty.
Everything was falling into place until it all came crashing down and I remembered why I’d written off dating in the first place. Because Ethan Byrne wasn’t just @BigDeckEnergy. He was a pro hockey player. Number 41, the center for the Seattle Cyclones, to be exact. He also happened to be my brand-new client and completely off-limits.
Too bad I already knew exactly how big his deck really was.
The Dating Playbook is a steamy stand-alone novel in Kim Loraine's Anything for Love series featuring a strong heroine, a hero with a hot AF British accent, and lots of flirty banter.

Because she had me at "hockey",
I adored Elyse and Ethan's story - which was made all the better by Shane East in my ears :) Can we say total eargasms as he whispers sweet nothings to me... I mean, to Elyse
From their their awesome meet cute that had me laughing, to the last line, I just really, really liked this story.
Loved it

Rather than being deterred Ethan is intrigued by Elles. What starts out as messages, leads to phone calls and once they meet it is game on. The only setback to their happiness is that Ethan hasn’t shared his occupation and when their professional worlds clash it causes a little turmoil.
The banter between them is humorous and the chemistry hot so when you throw in a sexy British hockey player you know you are in for a good time. The choice of the narrators were perfect as they brought out the sassy side of Elles which is a perfect match for the swoony side of Ethan.

Elyse and Ethan’s penpal relationship was fun to follow. They started on the wrong foot–with tipsy Elyse berating Ethan after having bad experiences with men. It developped into a nice friendship, with some support and trust. Which is funny since Ethan was hiding a big part of his life, the fact that he was a pro athlete. Trust on one hand, and the impact such a relationship could have on Elyse’s career, were the main reasons it was a forbidden romance. Angst was at its minimum though. I never really believed their love was at risk, to be honest.
Their written conversations quickly evolved into phone calls, including sexy times. The attraction was already there, mostly I suppose because of their profile pictures and Ethan’s british accent, but also because of the level of intimacy they reached, even before they met for the first time. It wasn’t daring or unconventional–except for a moment or two–but the book was sexy.
So much that I had trouble believing Elyse and Ethan felt more than lust. There was a big ellipsis and we were told they talked a lot, but we didn’t read about it, so their declarations of love came out of the blue. In terms of character development, not considering the story arc–no twist here, the path to the happily ever after was a well-throdden one.
There wasn’t much besides the romance element. We don’t see a lot of hockey. Ethan and Elyse both have interactions with other characters, but mostly about their love lives. They had the best animals though–maybe as an illustration of how different they are from each other but they make it work somehow, Elyse and Ethan have respectively a cat and a dog, and the eternal enemies actually have a good relationship.
Narration was good, but not exceptional either. Both narrators are talented and do the job, but I was never surprised by their performance. Maybe it lacked a bit of heart and passion.
It was okay, no more, no less. A crunchy snack, not a three course meal. It was still honey to my ears.
