If you can read this book and still not understand that rampant, unfettered capitalism and greed are destroying humanity you have no heart. And absolutely breathtaking read

This book is rightly known as a masterpiece, and really should be read by everyone, although it's really tough going because of the subject matter.

But now we have Richard Armitage's wonderful, seamless interpretation of the many characters. The way he brings each individual to life is astonishing, and you feel as if you are listening to a full cast recording. I just shut my eyes and pictured each person and the ongoing action with ease.

This has to be the perfect way to immerse oneself in the book; I would recommend this recording to all those who have it as a set book for English Literature courses, as an easy and enjoyable way to study it.

I didn't expect to be so thoroughly enthralled by such a dark novel, relentlessly full of hardship and misery of a kind many of us, thankfully, will never know; but listening to this particular recording has made it possible to survive it, and even, somehow, look forward to hearing it again.

The is a fantastically written and performed piece of work by the inimitable John Steinbeck. I downloaded it without any previous knowledge of the subject and loved every minute. Hi he narration is excellent - beautifully paced with an accent and character voices that absolutely suits the narrative- and I felt completely swept up into the lives of the characters. The wry fast paced chapters interspersed within the story of the Jodes, cynically analysing the workings of businesses, corporations and banks are genius. It opened my eyes to a period of American history I barely knew about. I loved it.

just as good 20 years on as when I read it the first time as a 20-year old. although I cannot tell you quite why, this is the book that stood out for me most out of all the ones I have read. brilliant, human, raw, hope in a hopeless tale.
