About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

'I've done my damndest to rip a reader's nerves to rags, I don't want him satisfied.'

Shocking and controversial when it was first published, The Grapes of Wrath is Steinbeck's Pultizer Prize-winning epic of the Joad family, forced to travel west from Dust Bowl era Oklahoma in search of the promised land of California. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires and powerlessness, yet out of their struggle Steinbeck created a drama that is both intensely human and majestic in its scale and moral vision.

Best thing I have ever listened to on here. I usually struggle to finish or to even find something that the hearing the sample doesn't put me off, usually due to unbearable voice of narrator. I savoured every moment of this. The skillful narration matches the detailed story for excellence. I feel quite bereft now it's finished.

Just the most exquisite writing. I was transfixed from start to end. Not only that, but the narration was something to behold. Extraordinary that people of the world are still existing like this, shameful…

At first, you’d think this is a story about a son returning home and helping his folks- but this is actually about a mothers unwavering love and trying to keep her family together. Incredible narration!!

Depressing, but well written!
