The first volume of Gene Wolfe's powerful story of Latro, a Roman mercenary who received a head injury that deprived him of his short-term memory. In return it gave him the ability to converse with supernatural creatures, gods, and goddesses who invisibly inhabit the ancient landscape.

This was my first Gene Wolfe book, despite wanting to read The Book of the New Sun for the last twenty years. Although the novel has wonderful narration, I think I would have enjoyed the stort more as a physical book, where I could keep track of everyone's names much better. Wolfe writes notoriously dense prose, and his penchant for stories of distorted memories, combined with the unreliable narrator of Latro, made this a slog in some parts, at least for this reader.

For the price of free-on-Audible, I cannot complain, and I will go on to finish the trilogy before it leaves Audible Plus.

Probably deserved five stars...

Like the title said, it can be slightly boring or there can be times that you don't know where the story is heading and that's because there really isn't a proper story. I learned this is more about experiencing Ancient Greece through eyes of somebody who has to learn everything again basically like most readers of this book. so it is a clever device, but just not much happens.

Slightly boring but interesting book
