Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
The chilling and compulsive new novel from the number one best-selling author.
We are each our own devil, and we make this world our hell.
It's been 17 months since the Bloodsmith butchered his first victim, and Operation Maypole is still no nearer catching him. The media is whipping up a storm and the top brass are demanding results, but the investigation is sinking fast.
Now isn't the time to get distracted with other cases, but Detective Sergeant Lucy McVeigh doesn't have much choice. When Benedict Strachan was just 11, he hunted down and killed a homeless man. No one's ever figured out why Benedict did it, but now, after 16 years, he's back on the streets again—battered, frightened, convinced a shadowy 'They' are out to get him, and begging Lucy for help.
It sounds like paranoia, but what if he's right? What if he really is caught up in something bigger and darker than Lucy's ever dealt with before? What if the Bloodsmith isn't the only monster out there? And what's going to happen when Lucy goes after them?

Please bring back Logan and Steele
Sorry I just couldn't finish this book, didn't like the narrator, protracted descriptions. Steve Worsley did a much better job. Sad because I was looking to this book
Ah well maybe next time....

MacBride’s best work so far
I don’t usually leave reviews but I loved this story so much. It’s unlike anything I’ve heard before, every time I thought I knew where it was going there was another twist and another and another. There were points where I thought I’d skipped a chapter as I couldn’t keep up but I stuck with it and it was definitely worth it. I hope this is the first of many adventures of Lucy McVey.

Wow!
Twists? Crazy, odd, unexpected twists. Loved this book. Brilliantly written and the narrator was great too.

Scottish dialogue
No doubt the narrator is a great Scot with too broad an accent for my understanding. Some what spoils the flow of the book in trying to understand what has been said. Not the narrator's fault I'm sure I'm just not accustomed to understanding the dialect.

Not a favourite
Kept going until the end, but it was hard to keep track.
The narrator also took a while to get used to, sounds more like an M&S advert than a gritty thriller.

Worth the wait.
If you’re hoping for another Logan McRae, you’re going to be disappointed. But I do recommend sticking with this one, it’s certainly not what I was expecting but thoroughly enjoyable all the same.

WOW! His best yet
I was slightly put off by the narrator at the start, being used to Steve Worsley, whose whiny delivery goes well with the darkly humorous writing. Didn't take long to get over it though, and the book developed into a great crime thriller, with totally unexpected twists and turns. Thoroughly enjoyable. Can we have another please?

Disappointed
I don't criticise the author it just wasn't what I expected.
Lucy the main character was a strong detective with her sidekick "The Dunk".

Interesting
Not the story I thought I was getting, it has more breadth & Depth than that! It’s a really head puzzler
