Fourteen-year-old Mona isn't like the wizards charged with defending the city. She can't control lightning or speak to water. Her familiar is a sourdough starter, and her magic only works on bread. She has a comfortable life in her aunt's bakery making gingerbread men dance.

But Mona's life is turned upside down when she finds a dead body on the bakery floor. Nice story, which kept me engaged. I did spend the first third trying to work out what accent the narrator had. It was very distracting. Her voice was vaguely annoying, but I stuck with it because I liked the story.

Enjoyed the story but the accents were painful so took me out of it. If you want someone to be English please just use an English voice actor.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Mona's story. There were some amazing side characters and I adore Bob the sourdough starter. My only complaint was that at points the whole moved quite slowly, but all in all it was an enjoyable experience and a satisfying conclusion.

this book went places. it was fun. I was probably too old to properly appreciate it, but I was entertained the whole way through, which is more than I can say for a lot of middle grade books.

Not overly keen on the narration style but the book itself was very enjoyable.
T-kingfisher’s humour within stories is a fantastic breaker when addressing more serious topics. I adored the group of odd characters with so much charm.
