About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

In this beautiful book of classic fairy tales, award-winning author Philip Pullman has chosen his fifty favourite stories from the Brothers Grimm and presents them in a'clear as water' retelling, in his unique and brilliant voice.

From the quests and romance of classics such as 'Rapunzel', 'Snow White' and 'Cinderella' to the danger and wit of such lesser-known tales as 'The Three Snake Leaves', 'Hans-my-Hedgehog' and 'Godfather Death', Pullman brings the heart of each timeless tale to the fore, following with a brief but fascinating commentary on the story's background and history. In his introduction, he discusses how these stories have lasted so long, and become part of our collective storytelling imagination.

These new versions show the adventures at their most lucid and engaging yet. Pullman's Grimm Tales of wicked wives, brave children and villainous kings will have you reading, reading aloud and rereading them for many years to come.

Critic reviews

Never putting a foot wrong, the result is a magical complexity-in-simplicity that is sure to become a classic in its own right (Adam Lively)
Philip Pullman has radically reworked the Grimm tales for all ages (Nicolette Jones)
One of Pullman's most useful additions is the vastly improved poems and jingles...his freer versions are catchy and authentic
I've admired Philip Pullman since his early fantasy Galatea on through the splendid trilogy His Dark Materials. All of his gifts, including his prose eloquence, and his endless high Romantic imagination, are manifested in this marvelous retelling of Grimm (Harold Bloom)

The narrator was superb and kept the various stories and characters distinctly unique. I highly recommend this.

I listen to this every night so I can sleep and have been for the past year. I want to find something else to listen to because I now know every story off by heart but I just can’t find anything that’s as good as the Grimm tales!

I love this audiobook

The stories are so grim but engagingly told I can listen to them over and over. Fantastic stuff.

This is my most consistent go-to bedtime listen

wonderful narration to loose yourself into tales of "once upon a time".
I really liked the prologue by the author; never had thought that there could be so many nuances about story-telling.
Anyways, the tales here are unique, even if they might have been often repeated in recent times.

The best book? Well, I put it on at night with a 30 min timer and I’ve never got to 30 mins without falling asleep. It’s not because it’s boring just so relaxing. I love hearing these real ‘fairy stories’ where there is rarely a happy ending and people are having their hands cut off, having sex in towers, having illegitimate children, being given poison, wearing white hot iron shoes and dancing until they die. Disney it’s not. I had no idea the brothers Grimm wrote as their namesake. It’s not for kids but fantastic. Must have re-listened at least 4 times now. This one’s a keeper.

Maybe the best book I’ve bought on Audible!
