From the number-one best-selling author of The Ashes of London and The Fire Court this is the first instalment in the acclaimed Lydmouth series.

Workmen in the small market town of Lydmouth are demolishing an old cottage. A sledgehammer smashes into what looks like a solid wall. Instead, layers of wallpaper conceal the door of a locked cupboard which holds a box - and in the box is the skeleton of a young baby.

Items within the box suggest that the baby was entombed early in the 19th century, but when another man is also found dead, the evidence suggests that the baby's death is more recent and that a killer is on the loose. I enjoyed the story, but the recording was so very quiet. no matter what device I used I needed to max out the volume and even then there were parts I couldn't hear well.

Very quiet

What a super listen! Gripping and paced yet calming and measured. Wonderful narrator could listen to him all day. Downloading book 2 in the series immediately

Murder mystery at its best

Haunting, so atmospheric. The huge class differences of the 1950’s are so eloquently explored in this melancholic story. I could smell the poverty, feel the damp and depressing November days and taste the bread and dripping, cold from the larder. It’s not a satisfying tale but incredibly moving.

Excellent!

Narration is as good as it gets which makes the story so enjoyable and gripping. Characters live in the words and each helps the story along. You might have met these people and you understand the plot as they develop it.
A perfect audiobook.

Gentle but clever
